Actually, I lied a bit, they are not twice as heavy but as a pair they are nearly a kg more. Mainly due to plastic backplate, double bottom, heavier straps, motre adjusters, possibly heavier material. All good stuff, but not sure if I really need it.

The pocket is very lage - on my old ones I used to carry a 1 or 1½ litre bottle of water, a tight fit - could balance with one in each side (I cycle a lot in the tropics). The new pocket will comfortably fit one of those jumbo 3 litre bottles. Will probably use it to carry waterproof to avoid opening pannier when the rains come.

My last pair of Super Cs were wonderful and are still usuable for lighter loads. I don't know how the new ones will match up, very well I imagine, but from the old ones, I can definitely recommend. However, I suggest you look before you buy, compare with the other top favourites Ortlieb and make your choice.

I have flown loads of times with Emirates with bike. No problems. I just bubblewrap it and wheel it to check in. Great airline

I have recently bought a pair of these 'new' Super Cs to replace my ageing 16 year old ones - apart from being a lot bigger, they are also nearly twice as heavy. Not very pleased about this as I regularly fly with them and now have an extra kg to lug around.

I wonder if all the extra ' engineering' will make them last as long as the old ones?

Do you really mean once every chain revolution, or crank revolution?
Have you looked at this post.

Thanks Chris (CJ) for your reply - how do you know all these things? and to Paul (Smith) for reference to the very useful other post - I should have searched more thoroughly first. Both very useful although as ever a bit of contradiction creeping in.

I seem to have been dragged into a weight arguement - I dont care about the difference, its just that I possible foolishly opted for 32s over 36s and wanted to know how much strength I have 'lost'. I am a long haul (but not very rough) tourer and remember packing 5 litres of water onto my bike to get over a long strech of hills in NW Thailand - I worry about 5 kgs, not 5 grams!

Thanks again.

How much stronger are 36 over 32 spokes?

All things being equal (components, dishing, rim size, build quality), how much stronger in say %age terms are 36s over 32s. Has it ever been tested?

Everyone says that 36 are the best for heavy touring, etc - but if 4 more are so much better then why doesn't everybody go for 40 or whatever. I have often found that 'bicycle knowledge' is largely anecdotal and subjective, is this the case here or are there figures to prove it?

It could also be a loose or poorly fitted bottom bracket. I had one fitted slightly off and tightened like that. It developed a clicking - it will be when you press the pedal cos that is when the power is delivered. Also had it on another occ when new crankset and bb had bedded in and needed tightening up.

Maybe worth checking.

One more problem with using a GPS as a bike 'computer' is that they are very battery hungry. OK for day rides, but no good for exetended trips - something like 20 hours.

On third submit it works and leaves me logged in.

So I will stick to the old adage, if at first you don't succeed, etc.

Maybe the auto login switch turns off some of the library gremlins, but not all!

Sorry to have bored the rest of you. Fonant, permission granted to delete all this.

So I will submit again.

Sorry, I got timed out yesterday – I only get an hour session at the library.

Before that I had logged on with the ‘Log me in automatically’ switched on. I was able to post OK and then return to make a new post, still logged on. I then typed my new message, but when I hit submit it failed with something like ‘invalid screen’ and returned to a blank message box. I was then unable to log out, it kept telling me it was invalid. It eventually got crashed as my time ran out.

I can’t remember when this first started happening – it may have always been like it ever since the new message board system was launched. I rarely post more than once so it wouldn’t have been a problem.

Logging onthis time I had to enter my details 4 or 5 times before it accepted it. Then I posted this, but it went straight back to the login screen (I have just written this bit therest is pasted). I have now logged in with the auto thing set so lets hope this takes.

Don’t worry about wasting any more time on this – it may be the library systems, but they are quite different with different functionality (one is Essex Libraries and the other is Southend Libraries) and it seems strange they both ‘fail’. Re asking the librarians, they have no technical knowledge and I know that there is only one guy who looks after all the Southend systems, so any chance of help there is limited. I have had problems with one other site that I have to log into (a financial one), but there are plenty of other ones that work fine.

The most annoying thing is writing the post only to find it disappearing into the ether when I hit submit. I will have to remember to copy before submitting (I wrote this in word and am pasting in).

Anyway, thanks again – I will try from some exotic internet cafes next time I am away on a trip and see if I works OK there.
