Re: Railway cycle routes

There are many such routes in Germany, this page has links to GB and other countries.

Best be quick if you want to cycle on it though ............... they will be re-instating the railway in the next few years. :D

It's all very well enjoying cycling on disused railbeds, but it would be better for the country as a whole if they put all the railways back.

LMS (London Midland and Scottish?) No, it was the LSWR (London and South Western Railway) until 1922!

There is room enough for rail tracks AND a cycle way. No need to choose between them!

This is the sort of "prestige car" I like.

It is a disguised cycle.

Re: Proposed 20mph speed limit for Edinburgh

Supt Phil O'Kane, of Police Scotland, said: "We will not routinely police the 20mph zones"

Might be true, but there is no need to say it. Which side is he on?

My suggestion is: safety cameras should be sited at random.

And they should be in action also at "quiet" times (early, late, weekends) when there is little traffic, these are times when very many go too fast.

Paris-Brest-Paris 45 hours with little sleep

45 hours PBP would surely not be allowed if it were "work". (There are directives on working hours and for truck drivers and factory workers). I have never ridden more than 16 hours, that was enough. Seems to me as a safety enthusiast that PBP would clearly be much too much (for me), I would not ride it for fear of endangering my health. But I am a bit ignorant here ;-) so I can not really form an opinion.

What happens (mentally, physically) when one goes so long with little rest or sleep? I would love to read the opinions of those who have done it, or the end-to-end plus (1000 miles). What about even longer events (e.g. RAAM)?

Re: Food / Eating on longer rides

Start with porridge at home, goes down easily, slow-release carbohydrates. Eat litte and often during the ride: lots of liquid and digestible food: yogurt, apple puree, rice pudding.

A short time later I had to wake up my 12, nine and five-year-old to tell them that their daddy was dead.
The sounds that they made can only be described as horrifying.

bloody right, they should be repeated regularly on the radio instead of advertising and jingles and warnings of safety cameras.

It all depends on the evidence gathered during the investigation, of course, but if this were to result in a contested trial, I'd expect that the defence would emphasise the length of time the deceased had been riding apparently without sleep, and the implication of poor mental health.

Before anybody jumps on me, I'm only predicting a couple of lines the defence might explore, without expressing an opinion on the merit of their doing so.

.. riding without sleep ... What about P-B-P, it takes place in 2015. Should it be banned or restricted? Open question!

Re: Bike lift...

There is something like this in Stuttgart, a rack railway that goes up a hill (200 m climb) and takes cycles without charge. Unfortunately cycles are only taken on the up journey, one must ride back down the hill.

Smoking while driving makes it harder to control the vehicle and distracts attention, for example when lighting up or re-lighting a pipe! It endangers cyclists too.

It is earnestly to be hoped that smoking will be banned in cars without children too. I have never smoked or telephoned while cycling or driving. I believe both are impossible.

What is worse than a leaf blower?

A leaf sucker (it is the same machine with the blower reversed)

I have a stock of new chains at home. I would measure the worn chain against a new one of the same make.
