Re: Terra Nova Laser Competition 1 Tent - Good choice?

Ahh interesting, thanks guys, looks like I might avoid this then.

Priorities are being as robust as possible and not too fiddly to put up - only require 1 man size, don't want anything too big.

Will look at other mentioned suggestions now,

Re: hand pump for touring

Thanks for replies guys.

Is that not how the zefal pump works though which seems very popular?
I agree, in fact i've snapped a few presta valves this way. The bike I will be touring on is a 26" so schrader valve and max pressure around 60 - do you think I am best to get a good quality hand-pump with connecing hose and hopefully built-in gauge?

Thanks guys,

Once the sleeping bag is in, is there much room for anything else?

Which pannier do you keep your tent in?

Is your Rack Pack held onto the rack by bungee/rope or is there a mounting system for this?

Thanks

Re: Camping Checklist

Guys, a massive thanks for all help. This will be my first tour and very grateful for your useful inputs.

I have 2 front Ortlieb Roller Classic (total 25l), and 2 rear (total 80l) and a Ultimate 6 Plus Handlebar Bag (7l)

jamesgilbert wrote:Is this a camping checklist or a complete kit checklist? It it's the latter, there are a lot of things missing.

Yes complete kit list. The items mentioned were the only things I could think of off the top of my head, I realized there would be a ton of stuff missing, just wanted to get a foothold started and work from there.
I will start going through all the advice and update the original post (and keep updating once purchase made with product name).

Thank you.

Camping Checklist

Hello,

Got my bike sorted, rack, parts and 4 empty panniers so looking for camping gear and essentials to fill them with!

I've not got to the point of researching which models of equipment to look for yet, just want to plan what I need for starters and visualize which panniers to put things in.
I'll keep adding to this but at the moment shopping list reads:

Purchased:

Front Pannier: 2 x front Ortlieb Roller Classic (total 25l)
Rear Pannier: 2 x rear Ortlieb Roller Classic (total 40l)
Bar Bag: Ortlieb Ultimate 6 Plus Handlebar Bag (7l)

Possible Layout:

Rear pannier 1 = Sleeping equipment
Rear pannier 2 = Clothes
Top pack = Tent and there should be enough room for any wet items including wash equipment
Front pannier 1 = Bike maintenance
Front pannier 2 = Cooking equipment and food
Bar bag = maps, snacks, gadgets

Kit Required:

Tent +Mallet + Sleeping bag + Pillow + Sleeping Mat
10l bladder with showerhead / wash kit (soap + towel)
Lock
Spare clothes / shoes
Multi-fuel stove + Fuel canister + Lighter + Windshield
Cooking/eating pot + Mug + Cleaner
Fork, knife, spoon
Swiss Army / Leatherman
First aid kit

Clothes:

Maintenance:

Help me out guys :)

Rack Pack / Top Rack Bag needed?

Hi all,

Great forum section!
I've got my bike and racks sorted. Next on list is camping gear and i'm sure I'll learn a lot from reading on here.

I've settled with Ortlieb front + rear panniers (+bar bag with map holder) but noticed there is also a 'top rack or rack pack' available that is designed to site above rear panniers on the upper flat part of rack. It seems most practical to keep on a tent in same place so all I would use bag for would be to put the tent in which seems a bit pointless.

Just wondered if anyone made this purchase and found it to be a useful addition?

Thanks

Re: hand pump for touring

Very nice, thanks.

That would indeed make a perfect pump for pannier use, only thing it is missing is a gauge.
I like the use of the hose, I have schreder valves but still prefer this feature.

Re: hand pump for touring

Sorry to bring this back up but on a 26" tourer where i'm aiming for around 55-60 psi - are these longer types of pumps required or do you think I could get away with something small enough to fit in panniers?

Physical maps for on-route riding?

Hello!

Just getting my front bar bag sorted for a tour. I've decided on an Ortlieb with map add-on (27cm x 27cm) which leads me to me question - which physical maps are known for being bike friendly throughout Europe and beyond?

Thanks

Well done one the build, that's a big frame - how tall are you?

I see you have used 26" wheels, are there any implications of doing this on a frame designed for 700c?

Thanks,
