Re: Europe 2022

Well, that went well :?

Thanks Willem for taking the time to answer; no firm indications yet as to when the requirement for a negative test result is likely to be dropped. Hopefully it won’t be too long.

Presumably land borders are open, so one has to wonder what is the point.
My guess is Harwich / Hook might be a reason for many folk. It's one of my gateways to the continent (especially Germany) but I'm always passing through the NL although I love the place, camping etc. I assume and hope things will change in the next few months.

would you want to have a positive test result :?
Ooops. Looks like my muppetry strikes again!

I do, of course, mean a negative test result.

Re: Campsite Pricing

simonhill wrote: 6 Jul 2021, 4:15pm This is often on campsites that charge tenters individually, such as a site I used to use in Rutland (but is fairly typical). They charged me £25 for van, including 2 people even though I was only one - no option. My friend with large tent and car only paid for one (tent) person at £11. She took up nearly 3 times more space than me.
Take a tent with you in the Campervan and pitch it next to your “car”.

Re: Humber Bridge closed to cyclists & pedestrians indefinitely

The Dartford Crossing provides an on demand shuttle service for cyclists; surely that sets a precedent for at least a short term solution here.

Re: Best Camping & Caravan Club sites for cycling

I don’t feel qualified to say if they’re “the best” but Polstead (Essex/Suffolk border) and Woodhall Spa (Lincolnshire) both offer good possibilities.

The Ram Mount looks interesting but a similar one I had wobbled a lot and gradually tipped over.

I would expect that for mounting on a handlebar, the component that's most likely to move would be the bit that attaches to the bar. How much torque are you brave enough to apply to the nuts on the U bolt... There's also a clamp mount with rubberised jaws which might be more effective.

I used to use a Ram-mount at work where they were deployed to mount an iPads in an aircraft. Once properly nipped up, I never had one slip, not in turbulence, on taxiways made out of extra ripple effect concrete, or indeed, as a result of a 'special' landing (it was the copilot, honest guv).

Buy online of course and you can try it. If it doesn't work, send it back.

Re: Camera mount

Ram-mount have this.

You can buy components individually too if you needed, for example, a longer arm.

Does your camera have image stabilisation? There is often a lot of vibration when mounting cameras directly to a bike. You might consider a chest mount which means your body dampens out vibration. Chest mounts are quite a lot cheaper too, but if you're local to West Suffolk, you can borrow mine to try if you like. I also have a Ram mount (for a different application) which nevertheless would enable you to test the concept

Re: Classic C2C and general touring costs

Not a C2C but I've just planned and booked a solo tour for myself; West Suffolk - Stratford-on-Avon - Oxford and return. I've got 5 nights booked (fully refundable) in Travelodges at an average of £41/night. Admittedly, 2 of the locations are in the middle of nowhere but they are en-route.

£20 per day for food should be doable.

If all goes to plan, should work out at £1 per mile...

Re: Foam sleeping mats

Sea to Summit Comfort Plus Insulated sleeping pad is advertised as having 2 separate layers of interlocking air chambers to provide some redundancy in the event of a puncture.

Never tried one, just recently saw some guy on YouTube saying he bought it because of that feature.
