Re: Cameras on tour

Just wondering what lenses people would bring. Do they bring a separate HDD for uploading (which seems very bulky).

I've finally got round to editing and uploading the footage I shot whilst riding my Jogle in August/September.

I must admit that although I felt I should get the camera out more often, I also just wanted to enjoy the trip primarily just as a cycle trip. Maybe I'll shoot more footage next time I do it...

Carriage of gear wasn't such a big deal; I was supported by my wife driving our motorhome from one night-stop to the next. Top Bird she is! I only had to carry gear appropriate to each day.

In any case, I shot the movie stuff on a Chinese GoPro copy (a Gitup Git 2. Yes, really!). I had 5 batteries but 1 each day was enough. The 64gb card was just under half full at the end, still with about 2hrs 30 mins recording time left.

The finished ( I say that, it's a bit rough & ready) article is below. Links to each days route are in the description.

Surely the lens is more likely to be wide open in low light, reducing the depth of field?

Either way, a reduced depth of field can be achieved with an M4/3. This taken with a Panasonic G80:

Re: Cameras on tour

I quite like my Canon G15. It’s compact, has an effective 28-140mm range of focal length, manual control, and its battery can be charged via usb using a charger similar to the one above. Only available second hand now; mpb.com have a couple.

Re: Planning an Outer Hebrides tour

The Twin Otter aircraft used for the Barra flights has about 17 seats I think, and although I don't have personal experience of how big the baggage hold is, I'm not sure a bike would fit in it if the flight was full and other passengers had baggage. Even getting a bike through the hatches might be a challenge. I think the dimensions below are in inches...

... what these signposts mean?

I've been home for a few days since finishing my JOGLE tour (more on that story later) and have started sorting through my photos. I saw a few decorative signposts along the way and have tried Google to find out what the circular designs (example in second image) are all about.

Does anyone know?

If you did fancy fish & chips in Hunstanton I can recommend Fishers, opposite the Tourist Office at the top of the green. I ‘ve been there twice in the last month and they were great on both occasions.

Let it not be said that I don't deliver on a threat. I have subsequently colour coded it and attributed my scores to each colour to produce a total score (I mentioned I'm an accountant didn't I?!).

Re: Pannier Advice

How do Ortlieb Roller Classic users tend to fasten them?

Do you (a) mostly use the strap and route it under the hook, or (b) forget the strap and clip the side release buckles together in typical dry bag fashion?

Personally, I find using the strap far too fiddly.

Re: Cycle friendly Wetherspoons

Anyway, our local cycle group used Wetherspoons "The Willow Tree" in Stowmarket recently for a lunch stop on a recent Sunday and found easy to use. Railings round the back to secure bikes to.

Finding pubs to accommodate us on a Sunday is becoming more difficult as the good ones only want to serve a full roast, and don't want a couple of tables clogged up with folks only wanting a sandwich and a pint.

Re: What happens if you board the wrong aircraft/train/etc.

Most (but not all) commercial aircraft can communicate with HQ from the air. If an aircraft has turned back, I would suggest it's most likely to be on the instructions of someone from the Company on the ground. This was a Japanese aircraft flying back to Japan. I imagine the crew would have preferred to have flown home. If the aircraft was still in US airspace, the US authorities could instruct it to turn round.

As Captain, once in the air, you can decline instructions from the Company but so long as what they're requesting is safe and legal, you would need a compelling reason to do so.

An airline can be very heavily fined for landing someone who doesn't have the correct documents. And if you don't know exactly who you have on board, how can you be sure you know who all the baggage belongs to.

Re: JogLe sight seeing

Maybe Aprils Fools day falls on a different day in Scotland.

Got a bit more time to reply now. Whilst photographing the big landmarks is worthwhile, don't neglect the details of regional specialities that tell the story of your journey; a Cornish pastie, cream teas, orchards and cider in Somerset/Herefordshire, Staffordshire oatcakes, red roses on signposts, black pudding farms, hardwick sheep, highland cattle, distilleries, things with tartan on, etc etc.

A cracking photo of a big landscape isn't necessarily easy to get unless you're willing to wait around for good light.

Re: teapot?

As discussed, a brew tastes much better with fresh milk. I'm going to take a 500ml vacuum flask next time to help it keep.

I use a fair bit of milk anyway, for porridge, brews, and I'm happy to drink it neat, just for a drink.
