Re: The Forum

You were talking about a change in the moderating of the forum. I was pointing out that the forum hasn't changed and in the long run the forum will return to normal. This particular section has got a bit hectic because of the nature of the subject matter, just as it did at the time of the charity debate (IMO a much more significant - but less visible - change to the club).

The rebranding is an important topic, but much of what is on here is not enlightening reading. If reading through the meandering opinions of others is causing you great annoyance then yes you'd be better off not trawling through the long debates in this section. In truth, for all the millions of words there's surprisingly little original information here and most of it is in the initial post of each particular thread, not the 5 pages that follow.

In summary, opinions basically depend upon whether people like and accept the new name and the way it was implemented or not. CTC/CUK have issued statements explaining their reasoning viewtopic.php?f=48&t=103845 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbixI0a ... e=youtu.be which some agree with but haven't convinced everybody. Proponents see it as a vital step in making the club more inclusive and better reflecting its stated goals, opponents see it as disregard for a much loved heritage. The name change came about after apparently extensive consultation with members and other stakeholders, but not a poll or consultation of all members. As a result, approximately 600 members petitioned the CTC under the Articles of Association to have a poll of the whole club, which they are now obliged to conduct.

Re: The Forum

The club's name is something that a lot of people feel very passionately about. If moderation was too heavy handed it would run the risk of people feeling that the moderators were not allowing them their time to speak. Inevitably threads about different aspects of the rebranding have sometimes ended up discussing the topic in general, thus duplicating views expressed elsewhere. I suspect it would require a lot of effort to edit and merge threads to keep topics separate, particularly at the moment where many people are just discovering the news and coming on here to voice their opinions. There is a limit to the time we can reasonably expect volunteer moderators to put into sorting out these ephemeral threads, particularly whilst some posters are very prolific.

There is still moderation. I and others have flagged posts over the past few months where things have got too personal or plainly unacceptable and moderators have taken action.

As Mick says, I'm sure normal forum service will resume when it all calms down. The charity debate got equally heated but normality soon returned. In the meantime, the vast majority of discussion about this 'lively' topic can be avoided by not reading this particular sub-forum.

Dennis the Menace and domestic pets are frequently said to terrorise, but are never said to be terrorists. I think it's better if we stick to the established usage of very emotive terms. It is because of their established usage that they are so emotive.

I understand what you are saying that this is a serious incident but without any apparent terrorist motive I don't see it as an act of terrorism.

Re: Bye Bye CTC Forumers

Funnily enough I tried searching for Cycling UK yesterday and couldn't find it (though CTC does appear down the results). I was going to hold off the criticism for a few days because I think it might take Google a few days to catch up with the changes.

Re: Bye Bye CTC Forumers

To be fair it is incredibly annoying when somebody hasn't done the most rudimentary of Google searches for information. Experience of previous threads also suggests that people deciding between two £80 Tesco machines don't tend to be receptive to the suggestion that these won't be fit for purpose and that they should spend significantly more or buy second hand. I've wasted slightly too much time typing welcoming and thorough replies to new posters who never even log in a second time in order to see them.

That said, I don't really predict these threads increasing in number as a result of the change. Forum traffic will arrive in the same way it always has ie. via search engines, bypassing the CTC/CUK website and I don't see why the name should make any difference to this. The much criticised "touring" word has never appeared on the forum anyway, so speculation of people being put off by it cannot apply to the forum.

Re: Name Change

I reckon the CTC need to launch an alternate 'heritage theme' for those who wish to live in blissful ignorance of Cycling UK. Maybe it could have the winged wheel in the top left of the screen :D

Re: Don't mention the CUK

No wind up.
From the Brand Kit (pdf): http://www.cyclinguk.org/sites/default/ ... nd_kit.pdf
We are proud of our new name: Cycling UK. To grow our message and influence we need to make it as well-known as possible, it should never be abbreviated to CUK.

Grammar and apostrophes
When using our name in copy, please ensure to:
Always write the name out as Cycling UK.
Use a cap C on ‘Cycling’ (it’s not a cap on the logo but that’s a design thing; it’s our name so treat it as a title and use the cap).
Use double caps on ‘UK’.
Treat our name as a singular as we’re THE force for change, so for example, ‘Cycling UK is the cyclists’ champion’.
Use the apostrophe as a singular with our name so for example, ‘Cycling UK’s regional volunteers are awesome’.
Be careful with that other apostrophe – make sure when using our strapline (The cyclists’ champion) in text that you always make the cyclists plural because we’re there for everyone who loves cycling, so it must always be written cyclists’ (apostrophe after the ‘s’).

Re: Presta to Schrader and vice versa, what about the pressu

I don't know about the adapters but I've had about 90 PSI in Schrader inner tubes before without any particular problems. I think the reason for preferring Presta on narrow tyres is so that narrow rims aren't weakened by a big Schrader/Woods-sized hole drilled in them. I can't see why the valve itself would fail.

Re: Presta to Schrader and vice versa, what about the pressu

I've never tried it but I have seen a friend try to pump up a spare with their mini pump. That looked hard work from where we were sat with our brews :) I'd expect a track pump to be easier than that but might still be hard work. Guess there's no harm in trying. Otherwise, as I say, some garages still have free air (I think the local sainsburys still does). Otherwise a portable compressor which works off your power outlet/cigarette lighter socket can be had quite cheaply.

Re: Presta to Schrader and vice versa, what about the pressu

I think you might be overestimating the volume of a high pressure bicycle pump and underestimating the volume of a car tyre. Even as a registered tight so and so I'd rather pay the 50p to fill car tyres (or go to a garage where it's free).
