Re: Acceptable overtake?

My observation is that "it is the third car".
I've commented to club mates for years on how often the third car, in any group of cars, very often gives a close pass. Probably because they are just following the cars in front and have their brain switched off or possibly they never get a clear view of any obstacle ahead.
Has anyone else noted "third car behaviour"?

Re: Pushing a bike on a footpath.

If it's ok to walk with a stick it's ok to walk with a bike. Both are aids to the pedestrian.

Re: What's your resting heart rate?

Resting rate is 46. I suffer from bradycardia most of time. Mostly mild but I can often be found leaning on something after getting up.

Recently in hospital for a wee operation to my eyes the nurse took my pulse. It was 52 Eleven o clock in the morning after two coffees and just walked across the room to the seat. Nurse asked if I was an athlete? I replied no just a cyclist :)

What is concern to me is I've never been able to get a high heart rate. It takes a lot of effort to get to 125 and can't hold anything above about 116 for very long at all. In my sixties now but even 15 yrs ago when doing a lot of Audax I used to feel ill above 135.

I'm looking to change my car in the next year or so. Seriously think it will be worth buying something which can carry bike inside fairly easily. Without totally dismembering it! Probably just with front wheel out.

Has anyone experience with the Honda Civic? Can I get my bike across in the back with seats in cinema mode?

So less ticks to bite me, and with out the sheep we will have more ticks :?:

Only the ticks which are on the sheep the day they are dipped and for the period the treatment is effective. This effective period will vary as to the product used. So for example a treated sheep can carry on killing ticks which bite that sheep for another 4to 6 weeks.

Re: Who, What, Why: How dangerous are tick bites in the UK?

Sheep born in a tick area can live in a tick area. Sheep born out with and moved in can get tick diseases.
Years ago we dipped twice for ticks, spring and autumn coinciding with the rise. This was over and above fly dip in the summer. The chemicals used then were real killers, I think my health can testify to that. Therefore it is killing ticks. If the host is purely deer or Hares they are not treated, apart from a few shot, so ticks on them are left to live.
This is the reason some of the sporting estates in Scotland have reintroduced sheep. I worked with sheep for 40yrs and never once picked up a tick. The fogs would pick them up most often if we had been getting stray sheep out of forestry areas.

Re: Who, What, Why: How dangerous are tick bites in the UK?

If there are sheep then there are usually fewer ticks. The sheep are treated for ticks and therefore reduces the population. Because of many factors pour on and injectable treatments are used over traditional dips. These newer products although kinder to operators and the environment don't appear to kill ticks for as long.
Some estates have had to reintroduce sheep with the sole purpose of mopping up the ticks.

Wellies!

I used to lead off road rides years ago and if I turned up with my wellies on they knew it was going to be an adventurous day [emoji3].

Re: Scottish Coast to Coast Annan to South Queensferry

Good to read someone has done the ride. As it comes through my village, Wamphray, I'm hoping to see many cyclists as the years roll on.
Can I ask did you spot the sign to turn left at the crossroads as you cam into Wamphray? It must have been up three weeks before I spotted it and I was looking for it!

Re: A question of steel?

I've moved, last year, from 15yrs on a custom built Audax in 631 to a Domane 2.3 (alluminium). I wouldn't move back. If I did I believe the most noticeable thing would be the bottom bracket. It would feel like I was loosing power there now after the large extremely stiff BB of the Domane.

Re: Cracked chainstay

I recall having gear change problems for 7mls. When I stopped and looked a chainstay was completely detached. So I don't think a complete break should be that risky.

Just last week I discovered a wee hole and large crack in my down tube of my commuter bike. That's where the creak was coming from lol. With only 2 more winters to get through with it I felt it was a lot less hassle and expense to try mig welding it. Some research I did said you shouldn't mig weld cycle frames. Ignoring that advise I cut a patch from an old frame, wrapped around the cracked area and welded it up. It doesn't look pretty, it does give it character, and so far so good. So I would say you've nothing to loose by getting your farmer friend to have a go. I was a farmer/shepherd for 40yrs so know the skills. .......now pass me that hammer :)
