Mike's JOGLE 2015
On day 6 at mile 8 I would use the relief road A689 gets you to Dalston far quicker than fighting through Carlisle with traffic and traffic lights.

Re: Which puncture resistant tyres for a hybrid.
I've commuted, 60ml/week, for three yrs with Marathon plus. Had one puncture and they've just worn out. I've got a bit tired of the very stiff ride and have just fitted Continentsl Country Plus. They were a lot easier to fit and initial feeling is a kinder ride.
I audaxed for years on Gatorskins but I would think everyone went on the sidewall eventually.

Re: JOGLE challenge?
I think in my sighting that was an invisible cyclist. I followed for a half mile I then drove a couple of miles on and sat in a lay-by. Waited and witnessed the very same scene.

Re: JOGLE challenge?
If your theory were right I believe they would drive there at vehicle speed to the road conditions. Straight and empty I would think around fifty mph or thereabouts not fifteen.
Fifteen is a lot closer to a cyclists speed especially if there is a GPS tracker on it.

JOGLE challenge?
Witnessed two cyclists drafting their support car for miles along the B7076. Tracked one name down on Strava. Describes his profile as a JOGLE challenge. Hoping he's not extracting charitable money for his 'effort' or lack of it?
Speed of 18mph up a hill after over 100mls. Don't let him brag to you if you know him.
Worst offender I ever saw was early one morning on my way to work. A campervan emblazoned with charity banners driving along the B7076 at 15mph. Bike on a rack on the back, cyclist sitting Inside at the table eating his breakfast.

Re: Creaking titainium
I've just been driven mad by a creak. After much try and swap I had to take the saddle apart and grease the rail where it fits into the saddle. Problem solved for me.

Re: NCN Route 1: Dover to John o'Groats
There should be a medal for anyone who could follow the whole of a NCN route. Doubt I've managed it for more than an hour.
1600 mils in 14 days is 115 mils a day. An extremely hard task on good roads, I would say, for the normal mortal, impossible on any NCN route.

Re: Mudguard fitting issue
It's not good and I would certainly take it back and get it resolved to your satisfaction.
I also think there are a lot of mechanics out there who haven't a clue how to fit mudguards. I bought a new bike last year from. Trek dealer and part of the deal was I wanted guards fitted. On collection the shop said they weren't too happy with them as there is little clearance. Six months later I stripped the bike for a deep clean and noticed they had put the stays on wrong way round and was forcing the natural arc of the guard. Rebuilt the bike properly and not a problem at all with clearance.

Amazed as to how many punctures some of you have. The one thing I would add, I always do them at home and dry and I always clean the area with Meths.

Hope you are staying at Wayfarers Hostel in Penrith. Accommodation and bike store are superb. Plenty of tools for running repairs also.

Re: Help- Accommodation in/near Moffat
This is ten miles before Moffat on your route. It is becoming popular with cyclists. The food is home from home not pretentious. The steak pie is excellent. http://www.lockerbielorrypark.co.uk/ £35 for Dbl/twin and £20 for a single.
