Yes I would carry on using it without a worry.

Re: A6 - how busy?
Not very busy but I prefer the road on the west of the Mway. IMHO quieter and flatter then the cycle route from Newton Rigg college to Penrith cuts out a hill before Penrith also.

Re: Nightmare drive
Having just gone up the hill using street view I see many of the passing opportunities are on the RHS. If I was cycling up that hill I would be moving slowly at those points and willing the driver behind to pass me. Most drivers will seize those opportunities but there are always some who can't seem to plan ahead.

Re: Who uses a mirror?
Only use a mirror when I wear a helmet. Never thought the mirror was very good until I discovered there was a protective film over it. Far better once I took it off

Think they are spinning you a yarn. I'm sure Homebase and Wickes sell it.

Re: Restricted Byway Access?
I'm sure I read somewhere that the bicycle is a pedestrian aid. Much the same as a walking stick.

If you are looking for accommodation in Penrith I can wholeheartedly recommend the Wayfarers Hostel. Has 143 reviews last time I looked on trip adviser and still scores 5stars. Super cycle facilities with full workshop tools if you are needing to do any maintenance.

Re: Leyburn to Reeth
Surely there will be pedestrian access on the B6270? We have a road closed near me because of bridge weakness I'm cycling a lot now as there is no traffic. Just have to walk the bridge.

Made it an about an hour. Bit of drilled alloy with a nut bonded in it. Works a treat

Re: endurance road bike
I have ridden a Domane since last year. The hype is true, isoflex really is the business.
The boy in the shop with his measuring stick wanted to sell me the size up from what I wanted. What I got, with the stem turned around is perfect for reach. I'm 62 so not that supple now.

Re: 7 day LEJOG
Ah right, I see that will make a difference apologies for my missing the detail. Looking at that route, unless you are a fast climber, I would come out of Moffat back to Route74 at Beattock and not over Greenhillstairs. Maybe a mile longer, depends on which end of town you are staying, but you aren't climbing just to loose it on a descent with a bend that you've to brake for. I've some 15yo brake blocks tell you I hate braking lol.

Re: 7 day LEJOG
I am not going to argue with Mick F either having never ridden via Lanark to Edinburgh. I live near Moffat and have never even considered going that way. I would say the advantage of the A701 is there is no navigating required and it is, for an A road, a quiet road. Once you've got to the top of the beef tub, takes me about 50 mins, it is down hill for miles.
I usually go via Gordon Arms, Innerleithen, super countryside very quiet roads just a lot hillier
