Taking detours on a day ride taught me about perspective

Regular Sunday morning routes can get boring, you've been there, seen it all and don't even have to think. Add in a few detours and things are altogether different. There was even an escape.

Re: Is wild camping in England legal or illegal? (Poll)

In an extract from my guide to Wild camping, I describe it as follows. Wild camping is essentially sleeping on somebody’s land, therefore permission should be sought before setting up camp in England and Wales. Scotland is the exception (though there are some exclusion zones) and in England, Dartmoo...

Re: Easy inflation of the Exped Synmat UL (not integrated pu

A Synmat 7 M has a volume of about 3 x 20 x 72 = 4320 cubic inches. Farawayvisions' mini-pump has a stroke volume of about 5 cubic inches, so that's about 850 strokes of the pump, or the same as about 3 or 4 bike tyres to full pressure. I'm in favour of my first idea, the one in my blog post. 3 squ...

Re: Easy inflation of the Exped Synmat UL (not integrated pu

Farawayvisions: by all means. I put a chamfer on the ends of the tube to make insertion easier but that's all. On the other end I have an exped compression sack (which keeps my sleeping bag dry) so I don't need to use bin bags etc. Khain: an issue with the pump would be the volume of air on each st...

Merci Monsieur.

khain wrote:Why can't anyone make an adaptor that works with a bicycle pump for these things?

I think a bicycle pump might work with the cork as an adaptor fitting.

Can I add your comment to my blog? It's a sensible idea.

Easy inflation of the Exped Synmat UL (not integrated pump)

Do you use an Exped Synmat sleeping mat (manual inflation) on tours and expeditions? Being a fan of recycling and as tight as a duck’s buttock when it comes to spending money, I’ve devised a yoke for inflating the Exped Synmat UL 7 that will cost nothing . Here's my DIY version of the Exped Schnozze...

Re: Russia in January advice

Brrr. I was in Russia a couple of weeks ago and it was cold most nights. I can't offer any practical advice, but I can say that Georgian food is lovely and I'd love to cycle there. I asked some Russians about cycle touring and they recommended late Spring. But if January's when you have the time... ...

Re: Agadir to Fes over Christmass

I've cycled in Morocco twice, both times in December. I've started from Marrakech and from Agadir, though I didn't go to Fez, instead opting for the High and Anti atlas mountains. I've bivvied and used cheap hotels (about 5 -7 euros a night) I tend to stay off road and have found that due to the hos...

Gaiters worn over waterproof trousers will keep feet dry as long as the shoes are waterproof.

Re: women's waterproof cyle jacket

I use this one from Madison http://www.madison.co.uk/products/cycling/clothing-eyewear/jackets-gilets/flo-women-s-waterproof-jacket-aqua-blue-size-10/ It's definitely waterproof and breathable with good ventilation and the hood fits over the top of the helmet. I find that that if you take the hood d...

Re: Post-ride chips it is then.

I'm a porridge lover, but no matter how much of it I eat, I'm hungry an hour later. I don't have salt or sugar, it's made with milk, then topped with honey, nuts, and if it's the weekend I'll pour a bit of double cream over it. I know. Chips chips chips, give me chips after a ride and please ...

Heltor, I'm thrilled thrilled thrilled that you enjoy my work. Did I say thrilled? Thank you. And Bryan Willis would be the very same man that you met all those years ago. Dan was competing at the Nationals in Restronget, near Falmouth in 1983 and he thinks Plymouth in 1984. He never made the Intern...
