Re: I'm the man!

Gearoidmuar wrote: 18 Dec 2023, 4:10pm We have an apartment on the Spanish side near Ayamonte.
The Ferry goes once an hour in the winter, from Portugal on the half hour after 9.am Portuguese time and from the Spanish side on the hour after 10 Spanish time. You pay about 3.40 euro for bike and yourself.
There is a motorboat ferry from Alcoutim to Sanlucar and back. You just whistle or yell and you can get the man. It takes your bike too. It's cheap. Note, it's hilly to Alcoutim and hilly as hell after Sanlucar. I've often cycled it but not with full touring kit. I'd recommend crossing at Ayamonte.
Much higher up the river there's a bridge at Mertola.
Thanks for that info! I was thinking about a round-trip (from Faro airport to Seville), so going one way and returning another. I'm pretty used to hills, living in Cornwall, but anyway I'll have help with an e-bike this time.
Any more local info gratefully received....

Alora to Antequera (hilly), to Fuente de Piedra to Algamitas to Olvera (climb out of Algamitas 6km 5.7%) otherwise undulating, Via Verde to Puerto Serrano (flat)
Puerto Serrano to Prado del Rey (entering the mountains) to El Bosque (option to head for Grazalema via El Boyar 16km @ 5.5%) to Ubrique to Benoacaz (5.9% for 6km) then onto Grazalema to Montecorto to Setenil to Ronda. Ronda to El Burgo to Ardales to Carratraca to Alora. Around 370km plus 5300m of climb

An option to extend is from Ubrique head for Jimena de la Frontera via the Puerto de Galiz then take the ridge road to Ronda. Trains can take to from Jimena to Ronda
This looks a great ride. I've cycled from Malaga to Ronda and on to Grazalema. The latter is beautiful. Ronda a bit touristy for me.
To help others I have plotted your route on cycle.travel: https://cycle.travel/map/journey/515008

simonhill wrote: 13 Dec 2023, 10:27am The zip wire website says this
"Yes, there is a ferry service that constantly crosses back and forth between Alcoutim and Sanlúcar."
Could be worth emailing them to ask.

On a general point. This is why I encourage all people to post on Google reviews about what they find. I have used them a lot post COVID to see if things (hotels, bike shops, transport, etc) have opened. If no reviews for 3 years, then it's a reasonable guess that it hasn't reopened. My review on a ferry still running near Seville has had many likes.
That's good advice. I have sent a message to the zipwire people.
Earlier this year I also started adding Google reviews whenever I travel. I do get a bit annoyed though when I'm asked to review every supermarket I've popped in to get a snack!

My proposed trip next month will also probably take in Seville, so I'd like to know which ferry you used!

OSM shows both a bridge across the tributary and a ferry across the Guadiana: https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=17/37.55463/-7.52458
For the Alcoutin ferry, there are a few recent reviews on Google (1 month latest) but as you say, nothing about bikes.

Interesting review here from Sanlucar, the town opposite:
"It is a charming place, in the last week of March it places a floating bridge that communicates with the nearby town of Alcautin in Portugal, celebrating the smuggling fair that in ancient times existed throughout this area, mainly coffee, tobacco and basic necessities. that were scarce in this area after the civil war, "

Is that your zip wire?
No - the zip wire is here https://www.limitezero.com/ and the floating bridge can be seen here https://www.algarvetips.com/cities/alco ... ontrabando
Having now found that website for the zipwire, I see that it only runs from March. Presumably they have a ferry to return people who have zipped. So there is a ferry in the summer, it seems. But what about Jan and Feb, I wonder.

Thanks for your input :)

Between Andulucia and Algarve

This is a bit of a long shot, but I wonder if anyone has cycled between these two regions via a route other than at the coast, where there is a known ferry at Ayamonte? On OpenStreetMap there are ferries across the river at Alcoutin and further north at Pomarao (which is only a tiny village). RideWithGPS will route me across either of these, whereas cycle.travel only across the latter for some reason. I have searched Google and it seems the Alcoutin ferry does exist, but I can't find if it carries bicycles. (There is a zipwire across which I don't fancy with a bike ...

I'm thinking of riding this area in winter, not duing summer tourist months, which may of course affect the answer.

Yes. In Malaga (or other touristy towns) you'll be OK, but elsewhere it can be a problem. I've had to wait until 9pm for a restuarant to open (which is not so good if you usually go to bed at 10!)

Thank you all for responses.
slowster wrote: 24 Nov 2023, 1:46pm Target Composites might be worth approaching - https://www.targetcomposites.co.uk/. I suspect the cost of a good inspection will be high, because presumably the whole frame and fork will need to be checked.
I have now received a quote from Target: inspection only is £165 but including stripping, rebuild and shipping totals nearly £400. So I should be able to claim at least that.
This is a scenario which the solicitors used by BC and CUK for their members should be familiar with, and should be able to tell you what you should expect in terms of offers to repair, replace or make a cash settlement.
Yes, thanks, I am using the CyclingUK solicitors (Fletchers) for my claim.

..if I should ride this frame again?

Following on from briansnail's comment in my thread about my sprained ankle (viewtopic.php?p=1810400#p1810400), I'm beginning to think I won't trust my frame / forks again on the road.

There's no visible damage on the (carbon) frame, (my lower leg took all the force :( ) but I don't want the forks to break when I next hit a pothole. I have no idea what trauma the bike went though; evidently a witness saw me bounce off the bonnet although I have no recollection of those few seconds.
The frame is about 10 years old. Should I claim for a new one on the driver's insurance? Problem is that all new frames seem to be set up for discs now, so I'd need a whole new bike.....

briansnail wrote: 21 Nov 2023, 3:57pm ps You might be to kind and generous.Insurance companies write off cars as they might have hidden damage that will result in harm to other road users. Think they not not only owe you a new helmet but a new bike. You need to ask for lots and negotiate downwards. The car driver went into YOU .You did not ask him to run into to you. Whatever was he doing? Mobile I bet.
If they think an accident bike is ok they can have it.! The old bike can be donated to a school to teach youngsters how to mend punctures and do basic cycle maintenance.

I ride Brompton and a 100% British Vintage
You maybe have a point there, being carbon fibre I'm not too keen on using that frame on the road again. I'm using it on an indoor trainer though.
Not using a mobile; suspected drugs use so he was given a drugs test. Takes 1-3 months for the blood test to come back though ,

You could consider this Kona as it may be suitable for your needs - the battery is removable but needs a long Allen key with decent leverage (ie p or t Allen tool). This means that the front wheel either needs removing or turning 90° to get the Allen key in place so that's a bit of a faff, but apart from that it seems pretty decent. Electric system is Shimano steps, and can be had much cheaper than RRP listed here. IMG_20231116_160808.jpg
That looks interesting - but "can be had much cheaper than RRP listed here" - I have failed to find any for sale ! Can you help?
Thanks

Re: Sprained ankle

Thank you for replies.
Nearly 4 weeks now since the accident. I still cannot walk very far and am being kept awake at night with aches in various parts of my lower leg. In the last week I have been using an indoor cycle trainer to get my legs moving (mainly pushing just with my left foot).
I have had a couple of physio appointments which have been useful.
Whatever the influence of the cleats on the original injury, I now cannot use a cleat on my right foot because I can't turn my ankle enough to de-cleat.

Sprained ankle

I was knocked off my bike on Sunday (car turning right across my path, hitting my lower right leg just above the ankle) and spent the whole morning in A&E. The lower part of my leg hurt like mad , and my helmet was cracked so I had a CT scan of head and neck (which turned out OK luckily). The X-ray dept somehow got the wrong message and started doing my arm, not my leg, until I repeatedly told them it was my leg that was the problem. They then did the 'fib & tib' but not my ankle.
Four days later now and my ankle is very swollen and painful. I have used the 111 service to speak to a nurse and by all accounts it's a sprained ankle and not a fracture.
Two questions:
  • prognosis for riding again? (I haven't tried yet - only been hobbling about the house as little as possible)
  • I was using SPD cleats - would they perhaps have contributed to twisting my ankle?

Lovecycle wrote: 18 Oct 2023, 4:25pm I was in Spain last week with a friend with our bikes after flying into Madrid.
We caught a train from Madrid to Avila which is a one and half hour journey.
We simply bought a ticket at the train station which included reservations for our bikes.
I have in recent years travelled on trains with my bike in Spain without any problem.
Just make sure you give yourself plenty of time before your train departs as some stations are very busy with big queues.
Good luck!
Thanks. Avila is on the'Media Distanca' route I would have used from Santander. But I couldn't book beforehand and couldn't risk a whole trip (including meeting someone at a defined date in Malaga) if I couldn't use that train. So I have booked a bus instead. It's faster!

Thank you. That's reminded me that I can take my bike on the 'AVE' train from Madrid to Malaga, if it's in a bag less than 120x90x40cm - which means taking off saddle, bars and pedals - i.e. same as in a box for flying.
