Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

About 25 pages to read since I last looked in this thread and it gone way off topic. Where's Canuk these days he was one of the few who made any sense on this thread :?: Off topic, there's not much more to be said on the topic ! What sense did he make - I assume you agreed with his views then ? John.

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

If it was just an headlight bulb I'd be happy driving on one headlight and side lights. Park up at my destination and then ring the breakdown. You would be very lucky indeed if a breakdown service would change a bulb in daylight - they wouldn't, they are emergency services not a mobile mechanic..as...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

I have travelled across Europe as far as Peloponnese and throughout the UK for 50 years without breakdown cover. And for the last 35 at least twice a year to Central Europe all seasons sometimes pulling a trailer. And in years gone by with a Minor to the Med several times. A friend of my Father's u...

A garage will not do it for a few quid if it involves the removal of parts (like bumpers) !

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

By PCP I presume you mean contract hire or lease.Nothing wrong with getting a car that way. We do that with our most expensive car. According to the accountant it makes more economic sense than buying the thing outright as effectively all you're doing is paying for the depreciation rather than tyin...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

People don't really want the past. Witness the number of properly old cars (say for the sake of argument pre-1997) you see in use on the road. Vanishingly few. The first thing to be aware of is that the majority (80%) of new cars registered* are company cars, secondly the sale of new cars to consum...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

*P.S. Talk about not changing a bulb in years is quite misleading. I notice quite a lot of very recent cars with defective lighting, only the driver seem to be in the dark about it? I'd put that down to expectation. Back in the 70's and 80's you expected bulbs to fail, I can remember having an emer...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

Modern cars (and bikes) are better in almost every respect, I'm struggling to see why anyone would think otherwise. You make too many assumptions, and I agree the XS750 was crap (your words), it was when new and is now...wasn't a game changer in any way. That my 1950 Triumph Thunderbird is function...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

I always have a problem with people who make judgements on the past (whatever the subject) with the benefit of hindsight. Plus I don't agree that cars of the 70s and 80s were crap...crap how...just because of their lack of crash worthiness, quality, showroom appeal - what ? Both my classics are 80s ...

The Picos ? A favourite: friends and me on the top of a mountain a few years ago...we stayed on the outskirts of Potes (Cantabria).

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

I understand your sentiment but don't agree, I was brought up with cars built in the 60s and 70s - my Dad had quite a few all bought new and I do not recall - ever - breakdowns, failures, rust...may be you weren't fortunate enough to buy nearly new or new...and ended up with abused old cars - in th...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

The main trouble with older cars apart from the more polluting engine is corrosion. Very few (any?) cars that have seen regular British winter use for 20 plus years escape. It weakens the structure and is very expensive to repair. Then economics kick in. Not that I am against older simpler cars. Ma...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

Maybe you invest more time in prevention in the older classics and/or don't use them much in adverse conditions? Not really, the 33 year old had much of it's inner structure galvanised during assembly and the near 30 year old hasn't been out on salty winter roads for the 30 years I've owned it. I'd...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

...I would love a Morris Minor. Buy one then, if you don't drive much it makes sense or even if you do they can be upgraded with disc brakes and five speed gearboxes. A friend of mine has a traveller and it has a 1300cc engine, a five speed gearbox and disc brakes. It also carries bicycles inside. ...
