Re: Seized pedals
If you can get the body of the pedal off then heating the pedal shaft with a blowlamp should make it consider the error of its ways, plusgas beats most other things when it comes to penetrating oil, if you squirt it onto the hot item it seems to get sucked in as the work cools. failing that drop the whole thing into a bucket of diesel and forget about it for a week or two

Brucey wins the coconut !
The little wedge shaped pawls had a spot of corrosion on the pivots and were stuck down, overall inside the mechanicals there was not too much corrosion evident, the R shaped springs are intact, I gave it a solvent bath, blow through, lubricate and exercise the pawls, a good dollop of moly grease into the workings and voila! three speeds and smooth as silk gearchanges, very satisfying, I found my C spanners and water pump pliers to be useless and ended up holding the big ring in my bench vice to remove and retighten it.

Thanks Brucey, that sounds about right, it does lack the gentle ticking sound that my other SA bike makes, will report back after investigating.

Re: Made in China rubber smell
I once worked in a plant that made ingredients for rubber at Monsanto, one was a yellow powder that turned acidic when exposed to moisture, smell somewhat redolent of tomcats, what does the smell remind you of ? lets play "Name that smell"!

Sturmey Archer AW two speed
Currently fettling an old Triumph 20, gears two and three are great, gear one is a freewheel, flushed it out with ATF and 20w50, adjusted cable as per Sheldons method, some rustyness came out with the oil, going in tomorrow, anyone done this?
My thought is that as some of them work, and its an epicyclic train it must be pretty much all in there, yes I am quite bored

Re: Made in China rubber smell
The rubber components in many Chinese made motorcycles seem not to last very long at all, cant say I ever sniffed them though.

Re: Why are bikes so expensive…
I sold a nice overhauled Raleigh to someone today for £50, they seem pleased and got an entirely serviceable bicycle
Another one rescued.

Re: Aldi Sale ?
My local Aldi has had a lot of the motorcycle/cycle/running and camping stuff reduced all summer, there seems to be a lot of it taking up space in the store.

Re: Track pumps
In the past three weeks I have purchased both some of the presta/schrader adaptors (ebay) and my first track pump, ALDI £3.99
The quality and construction of the pump is nice, and theres a three year warranty too the pump works well in both presta and schrader modes. nice to know that other chucks are available as it feels like the rubber in the presta chuck will be the first thing to wear. I have given it a precautionary squirt with silicone lube.
When I tried the brass adapter with my proper automotive air chuck it did not work, but it was an ancient valve.

The attention of many car drivers is focused about twenty feet in front of them, anything beyond that range is not yet being processed and so comes as a surprise

Re: dynamo lighting wires
Go to Maplins and get some heat shrink to cover any joins, it does a neater and stronger job.

That looks like mine too, I will be charging it outside in a metal box I think, and not for too long either.

Re: "Weapons Grade" Lighting.
Try looking on Ebay with the search "cree cycle light" I was given one of the single source lamps last birthday and it turns night into day, this year there seem to be double and even triple ones, on the dim setting it seems to last a couple of hours and is superb.
