Re: A to B cycle routes with no mileage limits.

I've tried many map sites but ALL have mileage limitations for cycle routes.
I need route from Norfolk (NR9 3BN) to Wales (SA62 4JA).

I have produced this route using Autoroute 2003.

I have taken the shortest route and then drag to avoid as many A roads as possible.

I note that using the seach facility set on 0.1 mile from the route there are planty of pubs , resestants and accomadation en route .

I have teken no account of hills.

When I get home next week with access to OS maping I may be able to produce a better route .

I hope this of helps?

I feel local along the route can help with refinment and critisms.

URGENT Gary Fisher stolen from Morrison’s Hounslow

Dear Ladies and Gents,
Gary Fisher Cycle stolen from Morrison’s Hounslow West REF: 8904 18.45 01/11/2010

I regret that after a year and almost a half, a few thousand miles and a few scratches, a bit of mud and some scrapes, I have got complacent, I only locked my bike with one lock and I have allowed a ‘tea leaf’ to like my beautiful, big, red, Gary Fisher cycle more than I like it myself. It has yellow reflective 2tings stickers on the frame and the black metal basket, is registered on the police computer and has a Webber/Roland towing hitch.

In the basket were a pair of steel toe capped working boots and almost as important as the bike, some business papers, my diary, note book and camera. The bike was stolen from the railings and below the security camera at Morrison’s Hounslow West. It was there for all of four minutes! The bike was truly wonderful and if I don’t get it back I hope the ‘tea leaf‘ enjoys it as much as I did, but if you see or hear of it, I have never seen another and as you will see from the attached photos, it is very distinctive, please let me know?

Thanks for that and I promise to use two locks next time.

NDPB review: future of Cycling England

Dear Instructor,

You are probably aware that Cycling England is one of the bodies which has been under review by the Cabinet Office as part of its reform of all NDPBs. Francis Maude has, this morning, made an announcement confirming that Cycling England will be abolished at the end of this financial year.

Department for Transport has issued a press notice which you can read here: - DFT ANNOUNCES REFORM OF PUBLIC BODIES

The Government is grateful for the support of Cycling England in the delivery of cycling policy and recognises the dedicated work of the board and employees. But, the Government believes that the functions of Cycling England can now be better delivered within the Department via the newly announced Local Sustainable Transport Fund.

Bikeability will be supported for the remainder of this Parliament. DfT is also considering establishing an expert panel on wider sustainable travel which would promote cycling as part of the wider green agenda.

Cycling England still has a large programme of work to deliver for the remainder of this financial year and funding for those is not affected by this announcement. Cycling England and DfT programme managers will continue to work with you to deliver the best results possible.

London Boris hire bikes sizings

Dear all

I have been told the sizing of the bikes was based on average female in side leg, so therefore to be a average there got to be below average.

I am 5 foot 6 and take say 27 inch trousers if they made them

With the saddle right down I am on tip toe

I would ride it slightly higher saddle to get the correct peddling action but what about the less confident cyclist

but for anybody say 5 foot 4 and below the bike are too big

Also the front end is very heavy for the smaller rider

With that said I taught a 5 foot 7 lady to ride on one of these bikes on friday and we did a circuit of hyde park

Jeff Tollerman has asked myself and others to forward the attached petition with a view to overturning the decision, to convert the CTC to a charity, taken at the AGM.

Although Motion 8, to convert CTC to a charity, was controversially forced through at the AGM, there is provision within the M&A to challenge any motion by petitioning for a postal vote of all the membership to be carried out. The attached form has been developed by members wishing to challenge the decision on grounds outlined in the form.

As you will appreciate I have great sympathy for this as, until the chairman cast his discretionary votes, the motion had been defeated 1,719 to 1,797. Normal protocol would have the chairman voting with the majority, however on this occasion the chair decided to vote against the majority and so changed the outcome. Thus it was that the chair of the CTC, David Robinson, and not the membership, who determined the outcome of the vote.

On these grounds alone I would support this petition.

The petition has to be lodged by 15th August, and Jeff would need to be in possession of all the forms by a week earlier. If you wish to register your support for this petition, please sign it, along with any members you know who feel the same, and send to:

Jeff Tollerman,
21 Vernon Walk,
Tadworth, Surrey KT20 5QP

by no later than 7 August 2010

I would note that there is a requirement for a minimum of 200 signatures on the petition.

Re: Help with becoming a instructor

Depending your geographical location, in some place there is IMHO a over supply of instructors.

This means

there is not enough work to go round partictlary during the non summer months

it keeps the wage rates down, as result some of the instructor who have been employed have very little experance of riding a cycle, it shows

So before you become a instuctor, do check can you make a living out of it.

Is there going to be cross toasting at the dinner?"

Dear Friends

I sent an email to David Robinson Chair of the CTC Council

"David

Is there going to be cross toasting at the dinner?"

His reply

"Not discussed it but I hope not"

I believe that cross toast if done well, is entertaining and harmless

I found last year Dinner without cross toast without it so boring I left early

Speech of Self-Congratulations a real turn off,

IMHO WE NEED HUMOUR

Re: Open up the CTC

bikepacker wrote:I cannot help thinking that all this appears to be a complicated way of doing something that should be the norm in any organisation like the CTC. The CTC is not MI5 but the Director and Council act as if it is.

Yes, I agree both the Council and Director not just the current incumbent want to avoid accountability and to bluff their way though the decision making process. Along time ago the agenda was confidential

Why not just have a proposal that says; all documents relating to the running and management of the CTC and the CTC Trust shall be available to all members at any time on request. That is too simple, they would just avoid giving it too you

You could add that; should any staff member or council member of either the CTC or the CTC Trust fail to make available requested documents, they will be instantly dismissed. You are kidding, pigs flying job here.

Re: Open up the CTC

UPDATE

In light of the disquiet, express the recent governance of the CTC I have decided to submit the following resolutions to the AGM.

I have believed for some time the CTC is a closed shop and need to be open up.

Comments most welcomed

OVERALL REASON FOR THESE RESOLUTIONS

CTC is a company limited by guaranteed: Hence, the Freedom of Information Act does not apply; nonetheless, CTC/CTC Charitable Trust (CTC CT) should be very willing to place of its internal non-confidential information in the public domain via CTC web site. In reference to: CTC Values
In “CTC Strategic Vision 2007- 2012 that states the CTC conduct ourselves ethically and with integrity; our relationships and activities are based on trust and respect, cooperation and companionship.

ORDINARY RESOLUTIONS: one

It shall be CTC/CTC CT policy the default position that all non-confidential internal documents as defined by vote of Council shall be published and accessible to CTC members on CTC website.

Proposer's note
this may include: Councillors Handbook, agendas and minutes of council meetings committees and work groups etc.

The motion aims to increase transparency and participation in the decision-making process.

ORDINARY RESOLUTIONS: two

It shall be CTC/CTC CT policy that it is the responsibility of the chair of any CTC meeting (from the directors/ trustees down to and including informal cycling groups) to ensure the following:

that elections and appointments either contested /non contested by secret or open ballot will have the number of votes casted - for, against and abstaining - counted, recorded and in the minutes of the meeting and published on appropriate the CTC national and/or local website.

Proposer's note
this motion aims to increase transparency in the election process and to make elected and appointed officers more accountable.

ORDINARY RESOLUTIONS: three

It shall be CTC/CTC CT policy that for all motions put before the board / trustees, the names of those voting for, against and abstaining, will be recorded and in the minutes of the meeting and published on the CTC website. If a secret ballot is used, only the number will be recorded and published.

Proposer's note

the motion aims to increase transparency in the decision-making process and to make national elected officers more accountable.

The need to set criteria against which the need for confidentiality of an internal document is to be measured.

• Who will then make the assessment against these criteria?
• The difficulties involved in including "- Further issues arise for those without web access, they can't be denied
the information.
• All" documents, in terms of both the additional administrative burden (assessment, categorisation and publication) and end user accessibility to the information (wading through to find the bit you wanted to know).

A CTC is moving to information management, and hence all documents are being place on server, and hence there will be a need for categorisation, there will be an initial delay, and so be it.

Criteria against which the need for confidentiality

There is very few document that are confidential, the council /chair normally decides, it not perfect but at lest members can get more information
A Further issues arise for those without web access; they cannot be denied the information.

They can go to the library and look at www their, anyway the % of the population without access to www is getting less every day

A small issue with this:

Criteria need to be set with regard to "other appropriate places" and where the minutes themselves should be published.

Presumably, minutes would have to be approved by the relevant committee before publication that could lead to the appearance of a delay in presenting the information.

A A few weeks so be it , I may take appropriate places out.

I would be a little surprised if the voting numbers are not already recorded and published in the relevant minutes although
I do not know how accessible such minutes are to the ordinary member.

They are not , it like getting blood out of a stone, often abstention are not recorded , I know of occasions they are in the majority

IMO this ones is also unworkable. Anyone wishing to keep their own vote private need only requests the ballot to be secret; I cannot imagine that the chair could decline such a request.

There is normally a vote on secret ballots and if the Council try to make all votes secret members would smell a rat
