From the NHS information on Vit D.
"You cannot overdose on vitamin D through exposure to sunlight. But always remember to cover up or protect your skin if you're out in the sun for long periods to reduce the risk of skin damage and skin cancer."
And
"Do not take more than 100 micrograms (4,000 IU) of vitamin D a day as it could be harmful. This applies to adults, including pregnant and breastfeeding women and the elderly, and children aged 11 to 17 years."
However, figures quoted from various places on the internet suggest that half an hour in the sun in June in Spain could generate as much as 4000 IU
So is more than 4000IU considered harmful if taken orally but not from the sun, or does the rate of Vit D generation correlate to time to burn ?

Re: Weight training
Given how long it takes to increase muscle as we age but how quickly an enforced period of inactivity can reduce it, then anything which adds some muscle reserves would seem to be a good thing. Then other way to think about it is to ask how much muscle would I need in future to maintain the activity level I desire ?

Re: recipe boxes - all that waste!
But do the boxes have some merit if they start a family on the path to transition from surviving on ready meals and take away food. To trying to cook something from scratch. Not everyone has cupboards full of the incidental spices and ingredients needed for cooking, so a box that has everything they need without having to go and stock up from zero may have some merit even if it comes with questionable packaging.

Re: Weight training
I look forward to reading the more detailed technical replies, but I would assume that the impact or stress on the bone is the trigger for the bone to build or repair itself. But for that to happen the right nutrient and hormone building blocks also need to be available.

I think you could also have posted that article to the end of the "Witnessing the end of the NHS" thread in reply to the the discussion of an aging population needing to stay healthy. viewtopic.php?p=1741882#p1741882Cugel wrote: ↑8 Dec 2022, 11:47am Here's a good Groanydad article that goes into some detail about the benefits of weight training. Your comments would be interesting and therefore very welcome. Yes, they would.

Given how falls contribute, both directly and indirectly, to to the mortality figures and that maintainance of strength and balance can help mitigate the possibility of falls to some degree. Then some sort of strength regime seems almost obligatory. Even if that is just to try to reduce the muscle loss from sarcopenia which can start around age 30 and increases as we age.

Re: Heart rate at 70
From DCRainmaker review of the Polar H10.
– Polar H9 only supports a single concurrent Bluetooth connection (but still supports ANT+)
– Polar H9 doesn’t have onboard storage (remember, that requires the Polar Beat app for usage)
– The Polar H9 strap doesn’t have the little bumpy traction things, though I often use the H9 and rarely notice the lack of them.

Re: Heart rate at 70
I wear a Fitbit watch all the time and a Wahoo Tickr chest strap for riding. Comparing the data for a recent ride the Fitbit captured heart rate every 5 seconds, it tracked pretty well with the Tickr at a steady state but completely missed a 3 minute max effort that the Tickr shows. Looking at an export of the data, for the 3 minutes effort the Fitbit readings have a confidence rating of '0' which I believe indicates that it is failing to measure correctly and I would assume the numbers shown are just extrapolated from previous readings.
The Fitbit is their cheapest model so more expensive versions may work differently or function better.

Re: Witnessing the end of the NHS
I would say that it's impossible to work out, at present cost will equal budget + over run. However, without a proper discussion of the intended scope of the service in terms of deliverables and timescales you can't even give a estimate of cost. The present model seems to be do what you can until the money runs out.Tangled Metal wrote: ↑21 Nov 2022, 6:52am Does anyone know the cost to run the NHS now vs when founded? What about the number of possible treatments?

The funding looks a little different when adjusted for population size.

I'd 2nd tim-b's advice and also suggest some sort of DNS filtering, either you're own, using something like Pi-hole or easier still one of the free services such as NextDNS or OpenDNS. Better to stop malware downloading in the first place than to clean it up once it's installed. It also stops a lot of unnecessary analytics from 'calling home'.

It would be nice to have more information on the number of failures of cells / battery packs that were of a good quality and that had been used with appropriate charge / discharge and physical protection.

Re: E-bike battery fires
Concentrating on bikes really just highlights an issue which is potentially more widespread, the number of applications using variants of Li-Ion technology is vast now. This meta-review on Lithium-Ion fire hazard does a good job of looking at the risks and potential mitigations.tykeboy2003 wrote: ↑15 Nov 2022, 8:26am Interesting article in the Grauniad. Highlights the problems with Lithium ion batteries and suggests many (expensive) solutions, but fails to mention the obvious one - use a traditional bike. As far as I know, New York is not a particularly hilly place....
