Re: Restoring brooks saddle leather colour help

If the leather has darkened, dye probably won't take. Citric Acid may streak it. I might be inclined to either leave it as is, or give Brooks a call and ask if they have any advice. I am not far from brooks so may just visit the factory with it :-) I love the manufacturing in this saddle coconut st...

Restoring brooks saddle leather colour help

HI All, I am restoring a brooks saddle on my Raleigh all steel bike, I stripped it down primarily to clean and derust the metal springs etc.. however to my surprise when I examined the leather more closely it is green not black. I don't know why it has darkened up so much, whether it is the wax or g...

Re: Raleigh All Steel Bike restore or not

Rechroming Bike stuff costs mega money and the outcome isn't always what you'd hope for. You can get (and your bike possible had them once) slip on plastic/rubber covers for the Rod Brake Levers (to match the Grips if you are very lucky) I am guessing a bit of rust causing hand discomfort on Brakin...

Re: Raleigh All Steel Bike restore or not

It looks like my bike is 1960 deduced from: 1. Frame Serial Number 172 H http://www.kurtkaminer.com/bikecollection.html states that early to mid 1960's serial numbers are at this point undeceipherable due to insufficient data (well mine doesn't fit into any of the numbering scheemes) 2. Hub ID is FG...

Re: Sturmey Archer Battery Tube & Paint

the FG hub was also fitted to the (otherwise similar but cable-braked) 'sports' model, as well as various Rudge, Sunbeam and other Raleigh-owned brand bikes. Many of these bikes had stainless steel spokes, stainless steel rims and other quality features. Some had light alloy rims, even ~1950. There...

Re: Sturmey Archer Battery Tube & Paint

Nice description of it here. http://www.oldbike.eu/museum/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/1959_Raleigh_Superbe_17.jpg thats a great link but slightly different to mine in that it shows an integrated rear light and reflector, mine our separate with the reflector only on the rear mudgaurd. I have however ...

Re: Sturmey Archer Battery Tube & Paint

there are three different versions of the battery tube, IIRC roughly they are; 1) one with rechargeable dry cells 2) one with non-rechargeable dry cells 3) one with non-rechargeable dry cells and automatic switching They all rot like fury if the batteries are left inside them. The wiring is differe...

Re: Sturmey Archer Battery Tube & Paint

Having a look at Raleigh catalogues it seems that in the 1939 catalogue there is no mention of the battery tube, 1947 lists a battery container, tube, which had a rectifier and three accumulators , re-chargeable batteries, by 1950 these had become 3 standard dry cells. In all illustrations the batt...

Re: Sturmey Archer Battery Tube & Paint

I distinctly remember the battery tube on my father's fully featured, rod-braked Raleigh roadster of the 1950s/60s. It was the same colour as the frame, i.e. "Dirty British Non-Racing Green". Reproduction transfers are available from here:- https://h-lloyd-cycles.myshopify.com/products/st...

Sturmey Archer Battery Tube & Paint

HI All, I have a post out about restoring a Raleigh all steel bike, it was missing the battery tube but I have sourced a replacemnt which I will be cleaning up etc.. my question is this: does anyone know if these tubes came standard black - much easier or if they were paint matched to the frame does...

Re: Raleigh All Steel Bike restore or not

I used to ride the BSA badged version of this to school in the '60's, I can still remember the noise the slightly bent crank made every revolution and the slap of the chain on the chaincase when it needed adjusting or shortening. I see some of these where people add cork, or worse still, stitched l...

Re: Raleigh All Steel Bike restore or not

Sometimes serial numbers were stamped on the rear dropouts. Great find. :) i have checked one of the dropouts but will need to remove the chain cover for the other one. However as above there is 172H stamped on the downtube and some speculation on forums indicates that this convention may have been...

Re: Raleigh All Steel Bike restore or not

the FG hub was fitted to those bikes from ~1948 until the early 1970s. The rear hub will have a date mark on it. If you can show photos of the hub that may help. This particular model remained largely unchanged for a long time. However there were in fact numerous small changes to the appearance and...

Re: Raleigh All Steel Bike restore or not

I am no closer to a definite date on my bike, however from the hub it shows it is a dyno 4 marked FG - which according to the sturmey archer heritage page dates the hub as 1948! the only frame identification is on the seat tube marked 172 H - checked all the serial number sites and nothing like it, ...
