We did it last year with a Volvo T70 estate (£1000!)

six of us comfortably and the bikes on the roof.

Volvo 740 estate. Cheap and cheerful and the tdi versions are very quick!

I've never had problems buying bikes online.

be prepared to do a bit if setting up afterwards though, as cables usually get stretched.
