I'd never leave a bike locked up anywhere overnight.

Its just crazy, you come back next day and half the parts will be missing!

I service my own bikes once a month. Probably a bit less in winter!

You can put a decent tool kit together for about £150, which should last you a lifetime.

You can buy 20-25 mm Allen nuts in ebay for a pound or so.

Have you tried WD40? The spring might have just slipped off its regaining hook on the body.
Seems common in these rear derailleurs.

I tapped mine out with a £4 tap bought on ebay.
You could buy it, offer it to the local bike shop for keeps afterwards and they would likely do the job for free.

I use coil oil on all ny off road bikes, its by far and away the most comfortable and plush!
