I got my set of upgrade bits from Mercian. It was more than one bit, but I cannot remember the exact number. I'm sure the Mercian Campag expert will advise.

EDIT : Looking back I see you got some parts from Hewitts. I'm sure that they will sort you out for the upgrade parts.

I've emailed them - can't see them anywhere on eBay etc.

Re: Campy shifter repairable?

Just did mine, actually very straightforward - bought new springs and carrier from Paul Hewitt cycles. Be patient and very careful with the disassembly as springs can pop out apparently. There's a great description with diagrams in Zinn and the art of road bike maintenance. Took about an hour and now shifts perfectly with a satisfying click.

Re: Which Cycle computer?

I've owned a sigma BC16.12 wireless computer for a while now and I think they're really reliable. I have the model that does cadence too - £33 on Amazon.

Took it out for a 70 mile spin, the weight reduction took about a millisecond off my PB!!

Well I bit the bullet and did it this afternoon (I bought a star setting tool (£9.99) - more tools = good) and it was all pretty straightforward. Used an old stem as a guide to get a perfect edge, filed off burr and achieved a beautiful finish. The setting tool gave me piece of mind about getting the SFN nice and straight (took 2 whacks). Still cheaper than LBS and if I need to do it again I now have another shiny tool in my collection :).

Looks much better than a big old stack of spacers!

Cheers,
Martyn

Threadless Headset Parts

Hi,
Just pulled the forks off my specialized secteur road bike. It has sealed cartridge type bearings in the integrated headset. I noticed that there is an extra seal between the bottom bearing cartridge and the crown race (a flattened rubber type seal) - my question is: is this normal? What is its purpose given that there are seals on the bearing cartridges? Is it just another layer of protection? It is just that most assembly diagrams of threadless headsets don't seem to include it.

Thanks,

Martyn

Yes, the star nut will be straddling the section that I'm cutting. Is it easy enough to saw them in half and then remove any leftovers?

Yes, planning on taking the forks out anyway. Going to use an old stem as a guide.

Re: Moving star nut down steerer

Didn't realise I could get enough grip on the steerer by just holding it.

Moving star nut down steerer

Hi,

I am going to cut down my steerer tube as it presently has 25 mm of spacers on top of the stem and looks a bit ugly. The final cut will have just one 5 mm spacer above the stem. In order to do this I need to move the star nut down the stem. I have carbon forks with an aluminium steerer tube - can I knock the star nut down the tube with the forks and front wheel on the bike or will this potentially damage the forks? Or is it best to do this with the forks (gently) held in a vice?

Thanks in advance,

Martyn

Re: Storing Carbon Frame

My insurance just requires that it is in a locked building (including garage). It is locked to the wall hanger, however, if someone was determined they could find a spanner and undo the whole hanger from the wall.
