Re: Traffic Fumes

I've long since lost the links, but there have been studies showing that: (a) car drivers breathe in more exhaust fumes than do cyclists; and (b) the positive health benefits of cycling far outweigh the impact of exhaust fumes That study was about a decade ago, and car emissions are far, far cleaner...

Re: A30 and general A-road bashing

Even if there were any truth to this scurrilous slur on my fine upstanding character, the only prohibition signs I spotted clearly showed two-wheeled bicycles. I could see no such prohibition on tricycles.

I have checked my records and can find no evidence of any such alleged naughtiness!

Re: A30 and general A-road bashing

Speaking as someone who originally planned a route that was virtually all back-roads, and ended up doing a mix of busier and quieter roads, there were two factors. The first was simple practicality. Navigation on back-roads was often very fiddly, even with GPS. There are some stretches where you end...

I believe the law was changed some years ago so there are legal flashing lights now.

Re: Trendy, but Invisible!

There is an argument that it's contrast that matters, so black is the best choice in bright lighting. Not IME. Hi-viz shows up in sunlight far better than black. Whilst no-one would advise "stealth" clothing, the idea is that pedestrians and cyclists should be seen regardless of what they...

Buy a secondhand one on arrival, sell it on departure. It will cost you virtually nothing.

Re: Thatcher

OTOH if the neighbouring country were a large and politically sensitive one with nuclear weapons like China and the island were Hong Kong there'd be an orderly retreat with marching bands. There is no comparison between the two. We had most of HK on a 99-year-lease, and the PRC was perfectly entitl...

Re: Do i ? or don't i

I'd echo the recommendation to take a bit longer if you can. My usual ride is around 40 miles, and I did an 18-day LEJOG averaging 50-60 miles, with a couple of 70-mile days, which was all absolutely fine.

It sounds like the guy is doing a job he doesn't enjoy for not much money. It's easy enough to take your own photos anyway.

Re: Cycling Jackets

Difficult to say, as I don't really find I get cold when cycling[1] - the most I wear under a jacket is a jumper. I always find cycling a bit faster is a good way to stay warm. :-)
