Re: Inverness and North

bikepacker - cheers for the warning - I have seen comments about tides etc sometimes causing problems on Cromarty ferry but thought they normally managed to operate for foot/cycle passengers at least. I'll check tide times and make the decision on the route to follow accordingly. Tim - how rough is ...

Re: Inverness and North

Hi Norman - such a simple but effective tip. Thanks for the advice I'll certainly be doing that. Your planned route looks good. Just googles Strathvaich - looks pretty stunning. Certainly other than wild camping there does look to be little between Lairg and Durness - hence why I'm going to do that ...

Re: Inverness and North

Thanks Norman - I'm itching to get going now! Hope you get something planned in soon. I am a little concerned about the remoteness. I'm not imagining I'll be coming across many LBSs along the way so will be carrying even more spares than usual just in case. The bike is in for a major service and ove...

Re: Water Carrier

Thanks both. Meic - bop bottles (or even just water bottles i guess) not such a bad idea and might be worth looking at. The bottle you linked to looks useful but might be a tad too large. Rob - that's the sort of thing I was thinking of and looking on the platypus website it looks as though there's ...

Water Carrier

Not sure how technical this(!) is but I'll give it a go anyway. Does anyone have any suggestions for carrying extra water whilst touring? I've got the regulation two bottles but I tend to get through a lot and will be in some remote parts of Scotland soon. I'm doing B&Bs rather than camping so o...

Re: Inverness and North

Hi all, Thanks for the replies and info - sounds positive which is good. At least no one saying anything like ''don't get that road, its a complete wind tunnel!' :-) Norman - yes I think you did and I think you might have put a spanner (of the best kind) into my plans then as well. You made the alte...

Inverness and North

Hi folks, I've got a five day ride planned for a few weeks time. Thought I'd ask the good folk amongst you who might know the north of Scotland if this sounds reasonable or if there are any potential problems I should be aware of. My other half goes to Orkney to work on the Ness of Brodgar excavatio...

Re: Virgin East Coast Line website revamp bad news

Someone mentioned southern here. I've been looking at east coast, southern and south-eastern websites last few days and they are all moving to the same new system. Not an issue for southern and se as they don't do bike bookings anyway. For now you can indeed still use the old east coast system (whic...

It was nice riding through very quiet countryside on that part of the path

Re: Isle of Wight

Hi all, Thanks for those of you who gave me some advice in the posts above. I completed my rider around the Island a few weeks ago and loved it (though I was knackered by the end of it). I've just got around to writing up my ride so if you are interested you can read about it (with lots of pics) her...

Re: Coast to Coast with a child (11)

Hadrians Cycleway is largely easy. I didn't have any kids (or indeed anyone) with me but its pretty good going. From Newcastle its pretty flat most of the way up the tyne valley; the old little climb here and there somewhere around Corbridge - but not much. The biggest climb is on the way out of New...

Re: Southampton to Bristol

Looks like you can get as far as Trowbridge on the train. From there its not so bad a prospect to ride. Can follow the canal path to bath (flatter to stay on that than the shorter climb and drop on route 24) from bath route 4 carries all the way into Briz. I've not ridden that but think it's pretty ...
