Re: Train ticket pricing

Mick F wrote: 16 May 2021, 12:45pm As part of my quest on riding the bridges over the A38 west of Exeter, I'm looking at taking the train to Totnes, and riding the bridges to Exeter, then taking the train home.

Gunnislake is at the end of the Tamar Valley Line to Plymouth, and from there you can get on the main line Penzance/London.
From Plymouth heading to London it stops at Totnes, Newton Abbot, and Exeter.

So, to this end, I've perused the GWR website, and found an anomaly or two ........ surprise surprise!

I'd need to get the (more expensive) 07:24 from Gunnislake.

Gunnislake to Exeter single ............... and get off at Totnes is £8.20
To pay for a single Gunnislake to Totnes instead, is £17.60

How about paying for returns?
Gunnislake to Exeter return is £28.10

Single to come from Exeter to Gunnislake is only £7.55

Therefore, I book two singles Gunnislake to Exeter and Exeter to Gunnislake - total £15.75 ie a saving of more than twelve quid over the return price.

Single Gunnislake Totnes plus single Exeter Gunnislake ......... which is what I'll actually be doing .............. is a tenner more!

So I'll be getting two singles Gunnislake to Exeter and back again, though getting off at Totnes on the way to Exeter.
Be careful getting off earlier than the destination on the ticket. I could not believe the cheek of the railway company involved:

Sad but true :-(

Re: Ex-Post Office CEO Paula Vennells

When I saw she had resigned from her church duties I wondered 'why now'? Well my conclusion wasn't that she had a revelation she had done something wrong (I'm pretty sure she knew that already) but with the court quashing the convictions, that she had a hand in, her position was now impossible. So another 'leader' who has no shame, pity she did this in the church arena and they didn't 'have a word' before now :-(

I hope they claw back all the bonuses and look at removing her title. All those who lied in court or supplied false information should also be prosecuted.

Reminds me a bit of Lord Hanningfield who denied he had done anything wrong until all his many appeals ran out, then fessed up to minimise his sentence.

I believe the AGM resolutions, votes etc are distributed in Cycle magazine. Have you checked your back-issues?
Thanks for the advice. I've searched the CUK website for 'agm' and 'resolutions', the votes for the 2020 agm are given but not the resolutions. From this forum I found that the resolution about being 'anti' flights passed 78.54% for.

viewtopic.php?f=56&t=139788&start=15

So this did pass, what actions are the board putting in place to enact it? CUK's own company don't seem to be implementing the resolution yet.

The one discussed over here in October 2020 had "We would like to propose that the Club adopts a progressive strategy to reduce, and ultimately stop, promotion of cycling holidays that involve flying.".

Good point, I couldn't find the original wording and as this is an important aspect I've updated my original post, so many thanks for the clarification. I think the question is valid if the resolution was passed. CUK should put it into effect their own policies, unless 'progressive' is there as a get-out option to be used as seen fit.

Are CUK now pro or anti flights?

Having read the 'We would like to propose that the Club adopts a progressive strategy to reduce, and ultimately stop, promotion of cycling holidays that involve flying' in the AGM resolutions did this pass and is it now in force?

I ask as the web page of 'CTC Cycling Holidays' (which is "... is wholly owned by Cycling UK ...") is advertising a cycling holiday to Taiwan including flights: "Taiwan South to North (With Flight), 1st November 2021 - 17th November 2021 (17 days)"

https://www.cyclingholidays.org/worldwi ... php?id=556

I see that any operating arm of the charity needs to make a profit, especially as the gift aid "£100,00 per annum" is no longer available, but is this holiday compliant with the aims of CUK now?

Re: Classic Raleigh Chloe need some help with tyre size

To ensure any new tyre fits on the existing rims the important number is the bead seat diameter, 590mm in this case. See page at:

https://sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html#iso

I agree the bit of the rim shown doesn't look in too bad condition so the current wheels could be used.

You could go for a new and slightly smaller 650b wheel which is a more popular size, however newer wheels are often disc brake only and don't have rims suitable for brake blocks so you have to be very careful. Having enough spare drop on the brake blocks is also critical too so tread very carefully.

Re: is 7 speed cassette obsolete?

Nigel wrote: 11 Apr 2021, 10:15am The sprocket centre-centre distances on an 8 speed is 0.2mm different to a 7 speed (8 speed 4.8mm, 7 speed 5.0mm). Over the six shifts to cover a 7-speed cassette, that's 1.2mm, and getting into the "noticeable" territory on mechanisms, though if set for the centre of the range, and +/- 0.6mm on the extremes it's probably OK.

The bike in question is already using an 8-speed free-hub with a spacer to shift the sprockets outwards. I'll experiment with an 8-speed, thanks for the prompt.
It is (slightly) better than that as the limit screw for the smallest sprocket can be adjusted so the chain is centered over the teeth, the gear cable will just go a bit slack. You can also use the limit screw for the largest sprocket, however the gear cable will go tight as it is trying to shift further than the mech is now set to. This could lead to a max error of 0.4 or 0.5mm. On my bike I have not had any issues and it is an idea I think I picked up on this site from others wo had done similar.

Re: is 7 speed cassette obsolete?

On my old 26" wheeled, 7 speed MTB (in good condition and loads of life left in it) I had to change the rear wheel as the rim wore out. Long story but I now have two 26" back wheels, both with 8/9 speed freehubs. The first has a Decathlon 7 speed cassette + spacer. The second has an 8 speed cassette and no spacer. With the same shifters and rear mech they both work perfectly, albeit only with 7 speeds and the rear mech end stop screws and the inline adjuster have to be adjusted when swapping wheels (but only twice a year between summer and winter use).

In short I think you can use 7 sprockets of an 8 speed cassette on 7 speed freehub or use 7 speeds of an 8 speed cassette on a more current freehub. Both with your 7 speed shifters.

Ymmv, but it should only cost you an 8 speed cassette (and a chain whip and lock ring removal tool if you don't already have them).

When I look at https://www.cyclinguk.org/my_account/register-gift-aid still says you can register for Gift Aid.

Ian
If that is the same page as I previously linked to then they do seem to have updated it.

From what I understand gift aid can still be claimed on donations, its just membership fees that no longer benefit from it.

Re: The end of Gift Aid

Regarding the end of CUK gift aid on subscriptions, is this official? I ask as the page at:

https://www.cyclinguk.org/my_account/register-gift-aid

Is still up on the CUK website today (7th April 2021 - i.e. in the new tax year) clearly stating at the top of that page: "Under the Gift Aid scheme, we can also claim Gift Aid on membership subscriptions."

I was not a member at the time of conversion and NOT wanting to revisit that decision I can well understand the present disappointment of members of CUK who were involved on both sides that this has come about. Especially when I read the following (which is referenced on a popular information website to a document now no longer available on the CTC / CUK website). My emphasis - I'm unsure how the council could protect the benefits and so it was perhaps unwise, by whoever wrote this, to claim that they could?:

www.ctc.org.uk/file/member/201005006_0.pdf
Voting on CTC's future: "All these activities now qualify as charitable. With these benefits protected by the Council it must be in the interest of members to also grasp the benefits of Gift Aid on subscriptions. We can boost the income of the CTC by up to £100,000 a year – funding that can be used to support more cycling, more local groups and more campaigning. If we vote ‘no’ we are also turning away from public recognition. Society supports charitable organisations like ours financially because we can prove we make the world a better place – through charitable services to members and through our campaigning and promotion.
