Re: Sturmey archer actuator plate HSA470

I recently had my NIG hub apart to sort out this very failure…actuator plate failure. I have never had one of these hubs apart before but thanks to some excellent advice from Brucey (on another thread) I managed to get the whole thing rolling again. My hub was never quite right from day one, however...

Re: Chain Care

As with all things, the balance is value. You can have 1.5 to 2 b1s for the price of the b1rb "rust buster". Similarly, stainless chains are going to be more expensive. I think if using wax it may be better to accept and try to minimise the external corrosion during winter and rotate more...

Re: Chain Care

not used that one; I have used cheaper ones that are galvanised and they seemed to wear more quickly than the equivalent chain models which are not galvanised. One theory is that the galvanising soon wears off the side plates and turns the lubricant into abrasive porridge. In terms of preventing co...

Brucey.....Have you any experience of this chain?..https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/chains/wipp ... 112-links/

I'm liking the sound of 'Galvanised'

Re: Chain Care

Why would the S/A show 5% wear and the Rohloff negligable wear with the same chains and riding environment. Are they covering the same milage? Any thoughts ? As Brucey quite rightly pointed out, the wear IS 'point five percent' I have no idea why the chain wear is greater on the Surmey bike. I had ...

Re: Chain Care

Did you find measuring wear difficult on a waxed chain? I have found this tricky, possibly because wax partially fills the worn interstices. Is that why you are stripping then before measuring? Yes, more or less. My thinking was that measuring a freshly cleaned chain-no wax/lube/anything-on it woul...

Re: Chain Care

ENTIRELY due to wanting to keep my bikes cleaner I have recently started to experiment with waxing my chains. I have four bikes, three using IGHs. The IGHs keep things clean to a point and I wanted to see if a waxed chain would also help. I've read good things about this stuff..https://moltenspeedw...

Re: Surly Troll

You are not the first person to be shocked at Surly price increases. In April 2015 I bought a Surly Troll framset (black/large) from 'Triton Cycles' for £404.00....this year's frameset (Triton/black/large) is £712.49. For me it was all about the versatility of the thing, mine has been very much a 'F...

Maybe.

I did my own version of C2C in late May last year. Morecambe to Scarborough (as in west to east) Head wind all the way.

But that's May, the wind blows the other way in the winter!

Maybe.

Re: Thirty Years with a Sturmey Gear.

if you fancy a bike with a hub gear there are a few easy routes that are worth considering; 1) modified singlespeed. Singlespeed bikes have a functional aesthetic all of their own; one way of looking at (say) a 3s bike is 'a singlespeed with more choices' and realistically (because of the dropout d...

Re: Ten Miles a day - 2018

4505 miles, so just over 12/day. For me that seemed just about right. I didn't feel that I was chasing anything, it is simply the mileage that I get doing what I do. I wish that I knew how many miles I walked last year? I spend as much time walking as I do cycling and completed many 20 or so mile da...

Re: Worst dog incidents, and tips for dealing with them

I was recently cycling along the local cinder track (part of NCN1) There were lots of dogs around, non on leads, so I was riding slowly and on red alert. Sure enough a dog decided to give chase...a sort of small alsatian. The dog ran at the side of me in a real frenzy of barking and trying to bite m...
