I also have a Vaya that i use daily for commuting - in fact it's my only bike. I recently removed the rear rack and associated pannier (along with the accumulated junk that was in it and replaced with a Carradice saddle bag - total weight saving was 2kg or thereabouts. I have the Galibier Tourmalet jackets and have used it a couple of times in quite heavy rain with no ingress of water. I have also found that it doesn't have much of a boil in the bag effect. It's also packable enough to fold into a rear jersey pocket.
