Re: Ferries without pre booking

An alternative to just turning up we have used is to book by smartphone a short while before wanting to travel - usually from 2 days down to 2 hours in advance. Pre-booked crossings even if booked 2 hours in advance are normally cheaper than just turning up.

Re: Are you going camping when they open up on 4th July?

Boris Johnson is expected to announce to parliament tomorrow (Tuesday) details of what we will be able to do from 4th July, so hopefully some actual detailed guidelines will follow quickly after that.

Re: Anyone successfully using solar panels?

There are many more on sale now. I'm not sure why you think this is impossible. It is just that I have had several powerbanks, and they all have just USB output, and I have had experience of many Laptops (used to work in IT), and none of them had USB charging. Obviously things have changed - though...

Re: Anyone successfully using solar panels?

I've just over the last few days been experimenting with charging a laptop from a 25000mAH power bank. It wouldn't do it. Maybe the power bank's 2 amp maximum output is too low for my laptop? It's hard to know. Not that taking a laptop on a cycle tour is something I'd personally consider. I just di...

Re: Are you going camping when they open up on 4th July?

Is the likely safe use of toilets in campsites really much different from that for public conveniences? If one is open then surely the other can open with similar precautions. If campsite toilets aren't safe then public toilets can't be either. If so then that IMHO affects whether an area can open ...

Re: Are you going camping when they open up on 4th July?

Paulatic, Thanks for the link to the Scottish guidance, useful to read, however on the subject of toilets it says: "Toilets – due to the likely contained space of toilet facilities careful consideration must be given to how these can be used safely and within guidance. Ensure you have checked a...

Re: Are you going camping when they open up on 4th July?

Whilst the clubs (C&CC , C&MH )seem to know what is required to open for business I’ve noticed private sites seem to be floundering and unsure of requirements. I will admit to having a specific personal interest in this as my wife and I have summer jobs running a small campsite in Cornwall....

Re: What size of road tyre for my Old Mountain Bike ?

If you do a google search on "MTB 26 slick tyres" it will come up with plenty of choices from about £8 up to £20.

Re: Anyone successfully using solar panels?

From direct experience - we normally tour for three months each summer, camping, in Europe. We have a large screen smartphone each which we use for minimal communication, finding campsites and supermarkets, and photos. We use an "Anker" fold out solar panel, about 21w, which we connect to ...

Re: Gentlemen's underwear

I use these ones: https://www.marksandspencer.com/3-pack- ... olor=BLACK

Not cheap but they are almost everlasting, really close fitting and smooth so no chafing. I use them for all outdoor activities.

Re: Are you going camping when they open up on 4th July?

While here in England the 4th July opening remains uncertain. Sites are preparing/prepared to open but have absolutely no guidance from government on what precautions will be needed to open toilets/showers. This uncertainty causes real problems, not least because they need to recruit seasonal staff ...

Re: French Campsites are open?

At present campsites and bars restaurants in France are open. The borders "should" be open to visitors from the UK from 15th June. downsides: Official FCO advice is not to travel abroad unless essential, so travel insurance may not be valid - I would expect this advice to be updated fairly...

Re: Kilometres or miles

While I can happily "think" in miles or km, for cycling we have switched entirely to km. This is largely because we actually cycle more in Europe than in the UK, so km are second nature. Driving I switch the odometer/trip odo/satnav to km as soon as we leave the UK. In total we spend more ...

Re: car carriers in the uk

We use a Buzzrack towbar mounted rack on the car, and a Thule tailgate mounted one on the campervan. In my opinion the most important thing is to get one that supports the bikes by means of tracks that support the wheels, and holds them upright rather than laid parallel to hatchback rear. Also think...

Re: Bike touring- What to do with bike at museum

We tour in Europe for months at a time with full camping load. We have security cables for locking the bikes, and if we feel the need we have a long thin cable for securing the panniers as well, though this would be very easily cut. In general we make an assessment of each location - some places we ...
