Re: Knee Pain

This book (recommended elsewhere on these pages - thanks to whoever made it known) is great:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sports-Injur ... SwWktdz~HA

Has lots of exercises for the knees - in my case, the problem is being helped by doing simple strengthening exercises with my leg fully straightened (and stretches with the leg fully bent). There are different exercises for different knee problems. I've been riding out of the saddle more, just to vary my leg position a bit too.

Ooh, they look great. What are they like for gear-changes (I have trigger shifters)?

Cheers, that's quite interesting and far more detailed than the previous info I've seen (even if it does lead to an array of 'technical' questions).

The array of technical questions is of secondary importance here.

The critical issue is that the emergency braking systems were deactivated during the development on the basis that this task could be performed by a human. The problem is with Uber for operating an developing in an inherently unsafe way not the human delegated an impossible task. typical of corporate entities they are trying to dump the responsibility on the individual for a systematic failure.

I noticed this in the article: "Twenty-five times [since 2016], other drivers rear-ended the Ubers", which seems pretty high to me, and makes me wonder if Uber had a problem with their cars emergency-braking when they probably didn't need to. Maybe that's why they decided to turn it off? Or, if they were emergency-braking appropriately, I could imagine a computer-controlled car being better at doing emergency stops than a human, so any cars behind would be more likely to rear-end them.

Re: Road cycling routes from London (South) + finding House to hire

Hi Dries.

Sevenoaks could be good - lots of beautiful countryside nearby full of weekend cyclists, and trains into London.

Or the Whitstable area is nice, if you fancy being further away but by the sea. Also on a train line to London.

Re: SMIDSY vs SMIFY

Interesting, thanks for the link. Is there also maybe an element of the brain looking only for car-shaped things, so "car" = I can't go, "not car" = I can go?

I drive then cycle through the London rush hour every weekday morning and I know how easy it is to miss someone on two wheels, so I've stopped getting angry with drivers who fail to see me! I'll give the "bike" voice a go tomorrow...

Re: Who are the best/worst drivers on the road?

Mini drivers. The new Minis, that is.

Feels like Audi drivers are improving, in London at least.

And yes, private hire Priuses... too busy looking at their Uber app, no doubt. London's black cabbies are aggressive, but at least they seem to be aware of what's going on around them.

I tried my Theraband exercise last night for the first time and hey presto my ankle is worse this morning :x . I wouldn't mind trying something that doesn't help, but it's actively making me worse again! But I guess I have to keep doing it a bit longer before I give up.

IT DOES at first then you keep it up, don't give in...................................

that's how physiotherapy works!

Agreed! I ruptured my achilles a few years ago - surgery, in plaster + on crutches for 13 weeks, but the hardest part of it all was the physio once the plaster was off. Really tough! So, stick with it.

What shoes do you wear for the dancing? Could they be damaging your ankles?

And what others have said - maybe you've been pushing too big a gear on the bike...

Re: Old Skool

Yeah, I've noticed it amongst commuters in London. Most people on the hire bikes are not helmeted, and there do seem to be more of the "usual" commuters sans casque. At a traffic light yesterday evening, four or five out of twenty or so riders had no helmet on.

Get the best tyres you can - any deflationary incidents will be highly annoying. I can heartily recommend Schwalbe Marathon Plus and Specialized Armadillos. You'll probably need water to drink on hotter days.

cycling clubs on the streets of London this morning

On my commute into central London this morning I was overtaken by a small group of people on bikes in matching cycling club kit. Didn't think much of it, though it was a strange sight - usually it's just commuters on a weekday morning. Then at Waterloo a large group (probably about 20) from a different club came cycling the other way, heading south.

Anyone know what they were all up to on an ordinary Thursday morning in March?

Re: Nice route around London

Hello. The Paddington Arm of the Grand Union Canal could be good - https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/enjoy-th ... nion-canal

I used to commute that way sometimes. Can't quite remember the timings but, landmark-wise, you may be able to get from near Wembley Stadium to Little Venice in 15 mins, with the Trellick Tower in between. Further west towards Perivale it gets nice and country-fied too.

Re: another cyclist killed by a lorry in London

Regarding the handlebars point, it would be interesting to know if there's a pattern in the style of bike ridden by the unfortunate people who get killed - if you're taken by surprise, is it also easier to stop quickly and not lose your balance on a light road bike than on a heavier "classic" ladies' bike or something like a Boris bike?

And I wonder if people on these bikes imitate other (perhaps more experienced) city cyclists' filtering manoeuvres, without realising they're on bikes that are heavier-handling and less well balanced/poised... I feel more balanced when I'm out of the saddle when I'm filtering in London, and I guess it's harder to do that on certain styles of bike.

All very sad, anyway, and condolences to all.
