Re: a tad out of true? decisions....

That's very nice !
Keeps the spirit of the old bike, I think.

They seem to work well with Vee of Cantilevers.
That is a version of the RL340 designed for people with small hands. It is a road pull lever, and I would be surprised to find it works with full v brakes (as opposed to mini-vs), unless a travel agent is used.
Well, I guess I must have small hands-even though I always have to buy XL gloves.

I'm currently using in combination with Deore LX (Full size) Vee brakes.
No travel agent.
I like my brake pads close to the rim; about 1/2mm clearance.
Works for me :D

Can one obtain new brake levers to fit drop bars, which operate a vee brake? And, can one obtain non-integrated, indexed shifters for such a bike?

(I’m thinking ahead here, to the possibility of being able to swap easily between drops and flats on the bike I’ve got being built. It’s a thought that only just bubbled-up in my mind)
I have Tektro C RL 341

They are also very comfortable.

As to shifters - Bar end shifters every time, for me.
Or
For flat bars, Bar end levers combined with one of the "take-off" mounts.

Re: Reliable pedals for use with toe clips

The best thing you can do to any MKS pedals that use conventional ball bearings is to replace the balls with quality items and at the same time put a sufficient quantity of grease in there. There is never enough grease from new.

Re: Front derailleurs narrow seat post

What size chain rings are you using ? Double or triple ?

If the latter, I have a Shimano FD-M531 triple that I won't be using.
Like this:

It's suitable for standard sized seat tube.
If it is any use to you, drop me a message with your address and I'll send it to you.

Re: Bike recommendation for commute to work...

You could take a stroll down to the "Bikes For Sale" section of this forum where there is a nice Spa Cycles 26" Tourer.
You can find it's vital statistics on the Spa Cycles site https://www.spacycles.co.uk/smsimg/uplo ... ometry.jpg
I have no connection with the vendor or with Spa Cycles, except as a customer of the latter - I bought one of their 26" Tourers.

Re: Bike recommendation for commute to work...

Do you even need a bike for your commute ?

I recon that I, at near 70 yrs old, could do the distance in just over 1hr at a comfortable average walking speed.

However, if you just want a bike, you've come to the right place :D

Odd teeth

A very simple question for the forum cognoscenti.

Why do chainwheels usually have an even number of teeth ?

My intuitive notion is that an odd tooth count would tend to even out the wear of the components of the drivetrain (chainwheel/chain/sprockets)
Is my notion correct ?

Brucey wrote: 3 Jun 2024, 2:21pm it isn't an entirely new idea; long ago, there was an english derailleur which maintained a near-perfect chainline by shifting the sprockets from side to side.
Trivelox, it was called; with a jockey wheel chain tensioner.
Hollow axle and SA style toggle chain to move the sprockets. I’ve only seen them on tandems
I have a PRACTICAL MECHANICS magazine from July 1952 that features an article detailing how to convert a Tri-Velox three speed gear to a four speed.
