Re: Temporary Traffic Lights and Cyclists

Whatever allowance is made for pedestrians at crossings the ratio of vehicle passage to foot passage is in my view too large. I frequently see pedestrians waiting for 2-3 minutes for their 10 seconds of fame. There was one in Portsmouth this morning where about 20 people were waiting for countless c...

Re: Temporary Traffic Lights and Cyclists

I wonder how fast we'd be prepared to accept cars driving through road works governed by TTL if they weren't limited by all us lawless cyclists who dare to be assertive. There seems to be an unwritten rule on UK roads that says woe betide you if you ever slow down a car from going at the speed it's ...

Re: Temporary Traffic Lights and Cyclists

Legal is safe, perhaps mattsccm and you do seem to imply that it is not always the case. So what about the things that are unsafe but still legal? One aspect of this discussion is in my view debating the relationship between safety and legality. Getting through TTL's by bike does perhaps invite some...

Re: Temporary Traffic Lights and Cyclists

I don't know what this says about advanced stop boxes at permanent traffic lights, but if you apply the same logic then the cyclist is entitled to go to the front. Oh and drivers never ever draw up beside me and half overtake when I am queueing, they never try and barge past when I am in front, neve...

Re: Temporary Traffic Lights and Cyclists

I like the "cycle time" pun [XAP]Bob. Two minutes is interesting I was not aware of that. Do you know where it is written. I love the USA and the pragmatic approach to procedure. We could really do with some of that.

Re: Cyclist on trial for manslaughter- sentenced

None of that Tangled Metal. Rigorous judgement and sound moral reasoning are the keys where terminology is there only to facilitate expression. Changes to sentencing guidelines to reflect the impact of the crime. Yes a resounding yes and a confirmation that some sentencing for CDBDD has not been fit...

Re: Temporary Traffic Lights and Cyclists

Yes I often see the skeletal remains of cyclists still waiting for the sensor to acknowledge their existence. How long are you supposed to wait if you stop at a light that is never going to respond. Until a suitably ferrous object like a car roars right up your backside I spose. Sad and ironic, havi...

Re: Cyclist on trial for manslaughter- sentenced

One answer to the problem of equivalence in different crime scenarios is to remove the difference. So if you kill someone "unintentionally" by ANY means one is answerable to a charge of Manslaughter. Whether you are driving, cycling or walking, playing golf, flying a drone, or any other pr...

Re: Doctor heal thy self

A back pedal brake is in my experience a highly efficient and effective device. I can quite well see why it would be legal in the Netherlands. For me this would be inadequate and I would not feel safe without an independent front brake too. Conditions in the UK are so different from the Netherlands ...

Re: Just why can't drivers...

It's a matter of misplaced personal pride to get past a cyclist and do it in the most obnoxious way possible. Yes [XAP]Bob they certainly must love traffic jams and there sure are many others who have the same irrational attachment. I would like to see the Police (don't laugh) tackle this sort of th...

Chris Froome on Radio4

Is it me or is my perception right about the attitude demonstrated by Rob Bonnet in his post Vuelta win interview of Chris Froome. Does RB really need to ask CF about the alleged reputation of Team Sky in the past in an interview meant to publicise CF's massive achievement. Is this relevant? Is it a...

Surely a heanous mismatch of standards

This is from the Portsmouth News website http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/news/crime/driver-spared-prison-over-pompey-fan-s-death-as-police-warn-few-extra-seconds-could-save-a-life-1-8142355 I know the victim was not a cyclist, as if that matters anyway, but it could have been. This driver was not charge...

Re: Shared Path Abuse...Unusual Complainer..

Pathological ignorance and an inability to perceive reality. In complete denial and up for confrontation even if there is no basis in fact. A person who probably does not realise the pathos of their "position" and certainly has no awareness of how utterly ridiculous they sound. Result - Bo...

Re: Are we riding too fast.

Empathy is in a pathological slump at the moment amongst general society. Empathy can trump all the ills of the human condition yet it can be surprisingly hard to apply. Trouble is the majority don't even seem to bother. Lets all just ask ourselves how others around us feel when we (meaning I) behav...
