Re: How far cycling has fallen in such a short timescale ...

The date of publication in the local paper might be 1989 but I think that data might actually be from 1981. Looks very much like the census question on the matter.

Re: "Death by Dangerous Cycling" new offence?

We'll probably get a helmets story next. The ideal story would be Corbyn not wearing a helmet, wearing lycra Uh that's getting a little conspiracy theory. At any rate, might be a hard sell given plenty of tory MPs, including boris and jesse norman, have both been photographed in normal clothes and ...

Re: Is time trialling to be banned on dual carriageways (A63)

The 2600 doesn't relate to the two markers that almost replicate the TT course, the 3000 max isn't anywhere near it geographically (and the reason it's much fewer further down is the bridge) and the real figure is around what I said it was at the outset. Yes the HE figure is concocted, it doesn't r...

Re: TV licensing...

We don't do that in UK because it would appear that we would have state-run television. By making the TVL voluntary, it preserves the independence of the BBC. Does it really though? It's a bit of a thin illusion really. It's still parliament that sets the amount every how many years it is via royal...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

Well today's speech hasn't provided much extra material. Minimal progression in thought from the previous one. That aside, I'm finding it somewhat concerning that May's response to questions like "Is it worth it?" is not "Yes" or "No" or anything else that answers the q...

Re: Cycle ways ( in London ) are a waste of Space?

Quite, and a reduction in 'road capacity', or more accurately, private motor-vehicle capacity, isn't necessarily a bad thing anyway depending on location and impacts. E.g. if a good proportion of the trips on that road are shorter distance then the extra delay + a safe facility might be the kick the...

Re: Is time trialling to be banned on dual carriageways (A63)

The HE data is 'real' data that's measured by the induction loops on the road (mostly, there are a few radar ones around), these are the two rectangular cutouts you see periodically in each lane. Data is logged all year round and summarised into 15min intervals. Since the there are two loops the cou...

Re: Is time trialling to be banned on dual carriageways (A63)

link? it's on the dft website - traffic counts. I wouldn't trust what HE put up, they can't divide properly. I'm aware of the link vorpal posted, but that only provides daily flows, not hourly? I'm not quite sure where the dividing comes in either or why the HE would need to? The tris data I linked...

Re: Time trailing to be banned on Dual Carriageways

To remind about one of the crucial facts to add if missed earlier. Traffic count is 691/hr not the figure Highways England falsely use. This isfrom DfT website specifically between two markers on the A63 corresponding virtually identically to the course Link? Flow does get up to 3000/hr each way on...

Re: High Court Rules UK Air pollution plans unlawful

Anyway, the main gripe is that the DOT haven't taken action against VW for their intentional emission dodging - one poster says (quite reasonably) that VW should be fined the difference between highest and the existing VED on every car they have sold for the life of that car (say 13 years). As it i...

Re: What's with cycling on the RIGHT of a path?

All I am saying is that it is much easier to follow behind a walker than to have to negotiate them head on. It's not. Most wobble at low speed, which is recognised in design manuals as requiring more width... and if any route is that busy, it needs enough width, until at least two cyclists can pass...

Re: The blood suckers circle around when the pickings are rich

I have heard recently of several instances where schools have advertised vacancies for teachers and received no suitably qualified applicants. None. The wage, which has gone down a third in real terms over the last ten years, is just one factor. The reduced pension is another. The fact is that if y...

Re: What's with cycling on the RIGHT of a path?

Walking one should keep right (HC!), I keep as far away from motor traffic as possible, even walk on the grass On a shared path it's far easier if everyone just keeps to the left. If there's oncoming traffic and the walker(s) is on the left a cyclist can slow to walking pace until a gap appears. If...

Anything that is defined contributions, which is most of them now, would work better if it was simply turned into a proper market. I.e. moving your pot (or part of it) should be as simple and easy as switching current accounts. All they are after all is a savings account that you cannot withdraw fro...
