Re: Napoleon's Piles

Mike. One of my all time favourite books is "Island Years" (first published 1940) by Frank Frazer Darling. He lived (camped) with his family on three Scottish islands in the years leading right up to WW2 to study birds and seals. Two islands in the Summer Isles and finally to remote and wi...

Re: Napoleon's Piles

I see Lleyn as a magic place beyond Yr Eifl, and Enlli as an even more mystic island beyond the Sound, which "serves it in the office of a moat". Did you see the seal cave, on the mainland face of the mountain? Ian Sturrock, who rediscovered the afal is a good friend. I once stumbled out ...

I would love to get you started about Bardsey, have you landed? Firstly mickf I apologise fir drifting your thread again. Yes I have landed, more than once. Waved at the seals. And have climbed the top of the mountain more than once. Looked at the ruins of past lives, seen the birthplace of friends,...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

I have never disliked any trade deal with the EU? My objections to the EU are nothing to do with trade and never have been. I welcome free trade, and thats largely how things will eventually end up IMO. What I dislike is unreasonable damaging protectionism. AL The amount of goods and food from outs...

Re: Napoleon's Piles

I hope I am correct in saying the Tudors came from Angelsey. A Norse name! I have visited the church in Penmynydd, Ynys Mon and seen the alabaster effigy and tomb of Goronwy ap Tudur Hen, a tudor ancestor. Viking? I don't know about that. The Vikings and Saxons called the island Anglesey. The "...

Re: Give up flying?

One problem with diary is that you have to produce calves to keep milk flowing, and half the calves are males only any good for beef. So you have a beef industry on the back of that whether you want it or not. And all the cattle burp methane, which is a problem. I agree with your other upthead post...

Re: Napoleon's Piles

I think it's running in our family, handed down via the Tudors, (didn't think they were vikings!). My grandad had his operated on many years ago, fairly successfully, but I think, as with most things, the operation hs a far better outcome these days. I've got very early symptoms which I'll be keepi...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

What puzzles me about the stupidity & gross dishonesty of the EU's attitude to the backstop is that should the UK leave without a deal the EU will have to square the circle of the GFA and its single market protection. Why oh why it cant get real and solve that now and stop thinking it can offlo...

It's the EU who aren't happy, not UK.

The backstop was rejected by Westminster, yes?
So it's a UK problem.

Borders are by their nature two sided things.
I learned it in kindergarten.

Re: Greene king

^^ So we can drown our sorrows more cheaply I suppose. Personally I rather doubt it will become cheaper. Pretty much everything will rise in price. It is happening already. Cheap(est) isn't always best of course. I am a lover of high quality amd refinement myself, especially but not only, in eating ...
