Re: Helmet design features

The plastic cycling helmet has anti-utility: makes your head sweaty and itchy; straps make wind-roar; gives you neck-ache; induces risk taking.. Itchy? Mine isn't. Maybe you need better vents? Wind roar - adjust the straps properly. Or do you wear hearing aids? I've been told that they can be affec...

Re: Bike Size Advice

If riding roads/trails do you need suspension at all? Ever thought of a gravel (or whatever you want to call it)bike?

Re: Modern bicycles...

I love a lightweight steel lugged frame with thin seat stays but I hate downtube gear levers.
My favourite bike is my CF Merckx though.

Re: Headset bearing kit that will fit my current race?

What is the freezer logic? I thought putting them in the freezer would contract the metal and make it harder to get onto the frame?

The cups are a push fit into the head tube. The bigger they are the harder they are to push in.

Re: Radial/cross rear wheel spokes

Theres certainly an advantage in having an offset rim. I'm not very likely to get 11 speed, but I wouldn't have 11 speed without an asymmetric rim. I think you are right. On the other hand, I have some 20 year old Mavic wheels which predate 10 speed (I think) but permit an 11 speed cassette to be f...

Re: Radial/cross rear wheel spokes

The reason I say maybe not is because radial spokes are not going to be crossed, and will either be fitting inside the flange (in which case the potential benefit may be lost) or outside the flange, in which case the RD is going to be dangerously close to the spokes in a modern 11s wheel. Thanks, B...

Re: Radial/cross rear wheel spokes

Is there an advantage to having radial spokes on the DS, external to the hub flange, thus giving a bit more offset in highly dished rear wheels? Would any such advantage outweigh the strength/hub torsion issues? My Shimano hubs certainly look pretty robust, torsionally.

Re: Bent handlebars!!!

The bike is pretty new so in an ideal world if I swap the bars out I'd like to replace like for like, a quick search shows the contact sl d-fuse bars will cost me about £65..... Any other suggestions for suitable replacements? I doubt your bars are special. Any bars should do as long as they have t...

Re: new rear deraillier

I have a medium cage 105 RD ( RD-5701-SS ?) with a 32t sprocket, it works fine, I'm gonna try it with a 34t i suspect it might still be ok.

I think the medium cage is a GS

Re: New Bike busted. Pls help with fix.

Spa cycles have a good selection of square taper triple chainsets with cranks up to 175mm.
Buy the right replacement and you can use the rings from the old chainset as spares for the new one.

Re: Headset bearing kit that will fit my current race?

The last time I fitted new cups in a head tube I first put them in the freezer (they were aluminium) and then was able to get them in with hand pressure (wear gloves). Have a length of threaded rod and a couple of big washers/nuts handy in case you need extra force.

Is it safe to start levering the mech hanger attached to a carbon bike? Are the carbon drop outs/stays designed to be stressed in this way?

I came off my carbon bike in Mallorca - sideways like you. I didn't give it a thought. Having ridden over 1,000 miles since and having seen 40+mph on my Garmin since I have concluded that they are OK.

Re: Road sign "cyclists dismount"

In this case I don't see how you can be taken off the road. I often eschew cycle lanes which are half overgrown or weave through awkward obstacles and stay on the road anyway. For instance, in Evesham there is a "cyclelane" which cuts off a roundabout. It is about 2 feet wide by 50 yards l...
