Thanks for your thoughts people.
I've just returned from a very wet ride on my '77 Falcon
I'll take a look at a Phil Woods, bearing in mind this is a bike which will get little use.

French Bottom Bracket
I'm after a French threaded BB and I note Velo Orange do a sealed unit. French cups are both right hand threads and it is said that the drive side cup can come loose. Since the Velo Orange BB is rigid it occurred to me that I could reverse the BB and put the fixed thread on the Non - Drive side so that it would tend to tighten up and not loosen. The clamp cup is not attached to the BB so should remain tight. Modern BBs are symmetrical so chainline should be the same.

Re: Why did 'Peddlers' large cycle shop in Worcester close??
I knew the owner of Peddlers, or he was up until 3 or 4 years ago. I found him most affable and very much doubt that he was unhelpful. He was having a lot of trouble with his eyes and sold up. Maybe the new management wasn't successful.

Re: JIS THREADLESS headset
I've just bought an ETC alloy silver headset which is JIS - 27mm crown race and 30.0mm head cups.
My only reservation is whether I can get a spare lower roller race.

Re: JIS THREADLESS headset
I have just discovered another source of a threadless JIS headset
There is an offer at Tredz on 1" ECT headsets and these would appear to be JIS if 22.2/30/27 means what I think it means - and they are very reasonably priced - the better one having a water seal.
I've ordered one.

Re: JIS THREADLESS headset
I think I've cracked it - by reading every online ad and revue.
It seems the M:part Elite comes with a 27mm crown race. - Huzzar!

Re: JIS THREADLESS headset
Thanks to you both. If I could get a headset with Aluminium crown race then I could easily file it.
I could order an M part into Evans in Brum and mic it up, maybe. Its a free rail trip on my bus pass

Re: JIS THREADLESS headset
Hi thanks for the rapid reply. I need a 27mm crown race, which is JIS, and 30mm cups - so the M-part item may well be just what I need. Thanks again, I'll look into it.
The problem I have is that the descriptions of the headsets on sale only rarely give dimensions. I've already been caught out by buying the wrong thing - in my ignorance I assumed that they had been standardised decades ago.

JIS THREADLESS headset
I am in a bind. I have a nice new fork to fit my JIS steel bike and I went for threadless so I have more choice of stem/handlebar height. Basically I need a more upright riding position to protect my back. Now I am having trouble identifying a threadless headset. Most of the shops don't specify the Crown Race diameter (27mm) or the cup diameter (30mm). I don't want to touch the frame for fear of scratching it and similarly my newly painted fork could suffer if I have the crown race reduced to 26.4.
I don't mind filing the cups a bit if necessary and I'd file out a crown race but most seem to be steel and too hard to make this easy.
I did a search but most of the threads were old or wanted to convert from JIS to ISO. Where did these people get the JIS headsets from?
Can anyone help.

Re: Bicycle pump.
My Phaart Rumbler is good for pressure because the barrel is quite narrow. It has a flexible connection and foot stirrup. Needs quite a few strokes though. I use 25mm tyres and it works OK for them.
My very cheap Air Supply pump of similar layout to the Phaart has also got me (and several others) home on reasonably inflated tyres.

Has anyone mentioned Strava? (without me re reading all posts)
I think its GPS based because it works when the phone is on 'airplane' mode. It certainly has a map that can be accessed - though it is a bit fiddly.

Re: Dumbell spanners any not made of cheese?
I have one which is Mazac, I think. It's not great but was OK for removing the wheel nuts I used instead of quick releases, back in the day. I doubt it would be very useful for much now.
