I always put the cups in the freezer and then they go in the head tube easier.

Re: Bike stand - secure handlebars

I often gently clamp ally and Ti bikes around the top tube (with paint suitably protected). I did an experiment with a damaged ally frame where I clamped it up as tightly as I could in my Park Tool steel clamp. There was no distortion of the top tube, nor a Ti frame (terminally cracked). I wouldn't let my 853 steel frame tubes anywhere near it mind you.

Re: Replacement for Sram GXP bottom bracket

I believe you can get a spacer to bring the narrow bit of the crank spindle up to 24mm to allow use of Shimano BB. I get the Ultegra ones as they seem to last longer that the cheaper ones. (18,000 miles on the current one so far).
Alternatively I have a very nearly new 172.5 crank Tiagra crank set (50-34) which you may find useful. See sales.

Re: Suggestion on lower gear range for old Holdsworth

I fitted a 6 speed 14-28 freewheel in place of 5 speed on my Falcon Olympic by redishing the wheel. I then swapped the cranks for a Stronglight item with 34 and 46t chainrings. this worked with the original Crane derailer.
in my relative youth I toured the Wicklow Mountains carrying panniers with a 42/28 lowest gear :D .
The panniers were home made from RAF haversacks BTW, lined with bin liners against the wet.

Re: 10 speed 105 brifters with mini-Vs

I have Ultegra 10 speed with mini Vees. They work fine but I tried various noodles before I found one that didn't pull/push on the brake.
They are very powerful.

British Cycling

I have a hypothetical question which has been raised by a member.
Can our CUK affiliate club also affiliate with British Cycling? Or are they incompatible?
Thanks,

Re: Tubeless tyres keep blowing out, any ideas?

I have used Hutchinson tubeless tyre patches successfully - they are thicker and stiffer than normal patches.
I did have one upset though on another tyre - I blew the repaired tyre up to 95psi to seal it to the rim and the casing ripped and the patch came through. I can only assume that the damage to the casing sidewall was worse than I originally thought and I junked the (nearly new) tyre. It may have saved me an irrepairable blow out on the road though.
And before anyone says just use tubes I have had a brand new Four Seasons with an irrepairable damaged/torn sidewall and I junked that too. And a Vittoria which exploded, leaving a huge rent in the sidewall - a £20 plastic note got me home that time.

Re: Plastic mudguards- how long do they last?

freiston wrote: 20 Sep 2022, 10:35am My (almost six year old) SKS Chromoplastic Longboard front mudguard snapped last week, across where the bottom-most rivet is. Over the months (years?), I had seen a stress-line develop where it broke.

This is an issue particularly associated with the Longboard mudguard on account of its length - it extends below the lower stay quite a bit and curves around the front wheel with a shortish forward pointing mud flap that's very close to the ground, frequently getting caught or knocked, especially on kerbs. It's very good at gathering autumn leaves too.
My longboards went after about 6 months - its bumpy around here. The regular one last ages.

I've been surfing the 'net for a while today, and found that the 4603 is well out of date. Hence my question regarding an update.

I like the idea of the R773 from SJS. Even with postage, it's cheaper.
Why is the R773 at £15 and the 4703 at £37?
Maybe I should ask SJS?
The 4700 Tiagra has a different pull ratio from the previous generation, for the rear mech at least. This is not compatible with other 10sp group sets. This is the same pull ratio as the 11sp shifters and was changed to give better shifting when the cables were arranged beneath the bar tape. I can't say definitely whether the front mechs are similarly incompatible but I'm pretty sure that is the case.
The 4700 series front mechs do have the long lever arm like the 6800 series. In fact the 4700 front mech is visually identical to the 6800 (I bought one so I know).
I'd investigate the Shimano compatibility charts before buying the 4703, or just avoid it.
AFAIK all other Shimano 10sp road mechs are compatible apart from the 4700. So you could fit Ultegra 6600, 6700 or 5600 or 7800 as well as your 4600 series.
I have used 10sp 105 rear mechs with 10sp Ultegra shifters and they work.

Evidently the cycles far exceeded 250W
How do you know that?

Are you sure that you aren’t confusing energy storage capacity of batteries (in units of Wh) with power rating of motors (in units of W)?
You are correct. I misread it. Oh dear! Thanks for pointing that out.
My club rider told me he wanted more power and seeing those figures caused me to jump to a conclusion. I think we have the answer though.

thirdcrank wrote: 17 Aug 2022, 7:31am Without checking, I don't know the exact dates but that was when the comic had a spell as Cycling and Mopeds. I cannot imagine anybody thought that the typical comic reader was remotely interested in mopeds so somebody must have believed there was a potential readership among moped riders.

IIRC, what sunk typical British mopeds was that they simply complied with the regs - broadly a pedal cycle with up to 50cc assistance - where the likes of Honda exploited the same regs to produce a 50cc motorbike with pedals (only fitted to comply with the moped definition,) The regs were soon changed to dispense with pedals and the comic reverted to being Cycling concentrating on RTTC results.
My son bought me a 1962 Eagle comic for my birthday and in it was advertised The International Cycle and Motorcycle Show, Earles Court. Someone clearly thought they were appropriate bedfellows.
