I've had some very good results on my mountain bike with this system (using an inner tube to seal the rim and Stans sealing fluid):

http://www.singletracks.com/blog/mtb-re ... ain-bikes/

As mentioned earlier it allows you to run a lower pressure and stop pinch flats. I have been thinking about doing this to my touring bike however pinch flats are not really an issue on a road bike. That said I'm likely going to use the bike for some rough stuff, so it might be a benefit for me.

Regards,

I must add though, I think if I had the right wheels and tyres to do the proper conversion I'd not think twice about doing it.

Good to see it works for you! 8)

Would 23MM tyres be too skinny to do it with?
28mm Tyres best?

Young Chap in Cycle Surgery said not appropriate for 23mm road bike tyres?

Sorry Reohn2,

Should have said "The latest bit of technology" filtering into road bike... bit long winded! :D

What attracts me is the apparent puncture resistance and the fact that if they do they don't explode of the rims. Had 2 do that over the years and the thought is enough to make a nervous Nelly like me ease up on fast descents. Still tempted to go back to tubs for that reason.
To be honest I wouldn't carry a spare tube much of the time. I have never seen a slashed road tyre and can't remember seeing a slashed MTB tyre. Happy to take that risk except on long solo days.
Can't see me lowering the pressure enough to drop into compression puncture zones. That means pressure low enough to notice the ride difference.

Hi Matt,

Many thanks for the info!

Erm, what does the " .....drop into compression puncture zones. That means pressure low enough to notice the ride difference....." mean?

Hi Beardy,

The Second, as extracted above, thanks for clarifiying! :D

I'm thinking less hassle, self fixing tiny punctures.

Deciding on bike - best keep Commuting and fun separate?

Hiya All,

Went for a ride today on the road bike, 1st time in over a month. It was sooo good! 40minutes, no foot down, good run out, felt great afterwards. My bag seems to be road bikes, rather than off roading for fun!

Beside that, I commute each week by bike as much as I can on my Hybrid commuting bike, with panniers etc. I find commuting a chore rather than fun. Loads of stop starts, watching out for potential accidents, frenetic bits on the way to work etc. Sure, I have placed my mindset not to get worked up with other people's bad road craft, to appreciate that it is good exercise and very green. But no getting away from it, I find commuting a chore and a necessity.

So, treating myself to a new bike next summer/autumn, do I strictly keep commuting and fun cycling separate? I've done the compromise thing with Motorbiking, and always got myself a "sensible bike" that could take luggage etc. I've since ridden some unashamedly ballistic motorbikes, which I would have had much more fun with, and to hell with the sensible choice!

If a person is lucky enough to be able to run 2 bicycles, is it the sensible choice to keep commuting and fun separate?

Would using the expensive fun bike as a "Summer time" light commuter be bit of a nightmare? (E.g. Get frustrated I cannot ride it like I would on a social day out, be scared it would get nicked, or go too fast and have an accident in fast commuting sections? etc.)

Your thoughts would be appreciated!

New 2016 bike ranges out already! When is best time to buy?

Hiya all,

Popping into bike shops, the 2016 bike ranges are out already!

4 Questions:

Q1) Whats all this about?!
America and Asia still got nice weather, and the bikes come out in the UK regardless of UK autumn/winter weather?!

Q2) When is the best time to buy a bike?!
Academic for me this winter, but I see there are loads of sales on, with shops selling off the 2015 bikes before winter comes.
However, is now really the best time to get an expensive bike at a meaty discount price? Do people actually buy their bikes for next year, and mothball them away until spring?

Q3) Do bike Shops do sales again come spring, to bring people through the door?
Are they actually quarterly even?! (I haven't been looking at bike shop trends at all this year.)

Q4) So when IS the best time to buy?
Forgetting price for a second, when is the best time to buy a bike?

Q4.1) Mid summer? So one can see the benefit of the improved specs, best in isolation? And loads of time to adjust the bike to suit you, and test out extensively?
Q4.2) Spring? So get the most out of the new bike for the year. Just accept it is a better bike!
Q4.3) Autumn - proper into biking groove, so can get new bike set up eactly for you, by Bike shops hopefully less frantically busy, with their new sales done for year?

Hope you can advise!

Kind Regards

Disc brakes, deep section wheels? Opinions please 8)

Hi all,

Looking at bikes for next summer. Ride to work scheme, a real boon to help afford these kind of bikes

Saw a bike I really like the look of.

Giant defy 2 advance

Disc brakes, but with Weird deep section wheels.

Bike mags slammed the wheels, saying they were heavy making a bike sluggish.

But how are they in practice though?

When I popped in to the giant shop, they said the reason the wheels were like that was for aerodynamics. When the bike gets going it's really helps with the bike spinning along.

The disc brakes mechanical, as opposed to fluid based. So how are they in practice?!

Hope you guys can advise. I'm looking for a comfy road bike for next summer, maybe doing some longer rides, but nothing ott.

Cheers

.... possibly why the "2 in 1" don't work! slapping in too much of the stuff, and too regularily, into the washing machine!

Commuters out there, how often do you guys wash your nikwax/gore text stuff?!

Hope you can advise

RideToWorky wrote:The instructions a bit vague...

from Paramo website:
We recommend regular cleaning with Nikwax Tech Wash® (every 4-8 weeks with regular use, more often in muddy conditions, for example). Regular washing in Tech Wash will not damage the garment. Rapid wetting of the outer fabric in rain (i.e. water absorbed by the fabric) is a sure sign that the water-repellency is fading and washing in TechWash is required.

We recommend re-proofing with Nikwax TX.Direct® every 4-6 washes. More frequent re-proofing will not necessarily produce improved performance.

Not sure what's vague about the above. These 2 paragraphs seem helpfully specific and include suggested intervals as well as advice about signs of the need to wash.

Thanks Simon! 8)

I was referring to the instructions that came with the garment. Good point, will check the makers websites in future.

Was also hoping for some advise on people's experiences on best way to wash, what works etc.
