Waterproof Nikwak clothing - how do you best clean/reproof?

Hiya All,

I got a nice Paramo Quito waterproof jacket in the end from the following post:
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=101201&p=953032#p953032
Works great.

Still gets a bit sweaty from daily use, so will need regular washing.

Whats the best approach? The instructions a bit vague:

Is it?:
1. Regular washing in " nikwax Tech Wash" - (Cleaned, waterproofing no damaged, but not topped up?)
2. Occasional 2nd wash in "Nikwax TX.Direct" - (To properly reproof the waterproof surface layer?)

How about?:
"Graner 2 in 1" - can I use this?
It says "goretex and eVent safe" - but does not mention NikWax. Company politics, or actually different technologies?!

Hope you can advise
The jacket cost a lot, so be good to maintain it properly!

Best wishes
Martin

A Paramo Quito. I can wear it all day and unlike other waterproofs the inside of the jacket doesnt get soaking wet.
The item nearest to my skin is the wettest (from sweat) and it gets drier from there up to the wet outside of the Paramo.

The extensive pitzips and baggy fit help moisture get out more quickly when doing the intensive cycling (up hills).

It may turn out to be a bit too much work maintaining its functionality but you can wear something else on the majority of days when it isnt raining.

Hi All,

Many thanks all for the advise on Paramo Quito
I managed to get hold of one in the end, its good!

.... need advise now on how to clean it, it looks pretty technical!

I'll post in separate thread under "Technical" - for everyone's easy reference - hope you can advise there as well!

Re: Overtaking Wide? Your views.

All good points guys!

Will bear in mind.
Especially the bit of give loads of space!

Bit difficult though, with the skinny roads around bristol, to leave a full car door gap, and not impede oncoming traffic!

A bit OT, but if your walking boots have worn soles but still-good uppers, I found a firm in Burnley which re-sole and they did a great job on my scarpas. Far cheaper than a new pair, and as I find it hard to get a pair that doesn't rub, I know the resoled ones will fit me, an added bonus.
http://lancashiresportsrepairs.co.uk/
They also repair/reproof all sorts of other outdoor gear, garments, tents, the lot. They say they do bike shoes too.[/quote]

Thanks for the advise Flinders

For myself though, I looked into it a while back, when myself and the missus were walking alot. It wasn't that economical to us here in bristol, no decent local comblers etc.

also, wer always make a point of going for half price sales for shoes, end of season for next year etc

AJ101 wrote:Are you running SPD type pedals? (or for anyone else reading that is and considering the same) I've seen some great winter boot type shoes that you can walk in, click in with and aren't as wide as walking boots so don't keep rubbing on the cranks or worse on the pedal.

Cheapest , Medium, Expensive but great, Or if you want a road version

if you find later that you overheat riding uphill in waterproof trousers (unless its REALLY cold where you live!), an old courier trick was to wear regular roubaix style tights with a cheap pair of waterproof trousers cut down to make them into baggy shorts ergo your bum and back stayed dry and your legs wouldn't be bothered by being wet and dry off anyway.

Great Advice AJ!

I'll look out for those boots, next time I have to replace worn out walking boots!

RE:Courier idea - ah, cool!, alos with some gaiters perhaps to complete the look 8)

Re: Waterproof walking boots and bottoms - would that do?

Hiya all,

I took the dive tonight and wore my waterproof bottoms, and also walking boots. It was quite wet out there on the commute home!

I must say it worked a treat!

I unzipped the very top sides of the waterproof bottoms, and just buttoned them down. My sides were dry regardless.

Also the work the walking boots works fine with the pedals! It didn't interfere with peddling at all. In fact, the instep bit, to help you walk with a good stance, also helped with good posture was cycling!

Glad to see this works. I could use this for winter commuting as well, for when it gets really cold.

Also glad, because of the sheer cost of waterproofs and cycling shoes Etc

The trickier thing is grabbing the front fork and seatpost at the correct points so that the bike's own weight flips it nicely without it crashing into you! Edit: I just looked for a video of the technique on YouTube and didn't find one - loads of people grabbing the stays, which will strain your back, and a few rolling the bike back over the back wheel which trashes mudguards and the back edge of the saddle.

Hi mpr,

The item I highlighted above is brilliant for flipping the bike over.

The foam pads are held in place on the handlebars, and the seat pad is held on the seat!

The easiest way I found to flip the bike upside down , Is to use the back break and then just flip the bike over upside down. I'll look out for the mudguard though. The seat is protected by the flip seats foam thing though so that's fine

Re: Fireworks - Thursday 5th Nov - watch out!

Hi all

Glad to hear the actual evening isn't going to be too much of a pain!

However I must say, couple weeks ago I did ride over empty fireworks cartridge, The spike end that goes into the ground, and it frightened the life out of me as I was cycling along. I actually stopped, to see if anything was wrong, and eventually found the culprit and chucked it into the hedge!

Safe riding guys! Last week was a bit rubbish, I saw 2 accidents in Bristol, involving people without lights, people with lights, blood, ambulances, not fun

Wraparounds misting up in the fog. Do I need them in winter?

Hi all,

Bit of a nightmare going home! With the foggy conditions, my wraparounds, with prescription lens inserts, all fogged up!

I'm guessing, fact the moist conditions, my perspiration, within the wraparounds, caused it to mist up. It didn't help!

I've tried Anti mist spray stuff you can get for swimming goggles. That hasn't worked.

Can I put the wraparounds away for the winter, and just use normal glasses?! Or am I missing something with winter riding?

Reason I ask is, the whole reason I started waving wraparounds, was a Bee got caught behind my normal glasses last summer, and I had a massive accident on holiday.

Re: Waterproof walking boots and bottoms - would that do?

Thanks for the advice, and also for all the insights of what can go wrong!

I think I will try this:
1.when it's absolutely freezing, simply to waterproof bottoms and walking boots, see how that works
2.when it's raining and warm, not sure about this! Will experiment on a few things
