Re: Gammy neck and bike fitting
Sorry, yes, two different bikes shown
The point being an assumption on my part that the Nukeproof, as a gravel bike, would have more relaxed geometry... but when I found the saddle on it couldn't go back any further, but it could on the Colnago, I decided that should be the one to faff about with.

Riser drop bar options
Can anyone comment on the differences between Controltech Road Riser and Genetic Driser handlebars. The spec seems practically identical (perhaps a flare on one?).
And are there any alternatives at that price point? I've found a couple @ Β£140 but that's pushing it!
(Actually there is a carbon Chinese thing but it looks like the tops bend forward increasing reach/decreasing benefit).

Re: Gammy neck and bike fitting
I tried this. Did indeed feel much better, good advice. It wasn't "best" though, and would still like to raise the bars a bit, but I feel a bit more hopeful. Thanks.

Re: Gammy neck and bike fitting
The stem is already pointing up...
And deliberately as short as I could find.
Will try moving the saddle, but I thought there was a fore-aft sweet spot. And doesn't extending reach by any means mean you lean forward more?
I sure as hell can't hold my torso at an angle without hands like your pic suggests I should be able to.

Re: Gammy neck and bike fitting
Took a picture of self on my gravel bike. This position uncomfortable for neck. Note that said bike fitter so flummoxed by my talk of 650b we didn't take it further. Wouldn't fit on his rig
Argh, why did that rotate?!

Re: Gammy neck and bike fitting
My local fitter is also a physio and the website says "bring the bike you want fitting". I'm sure he'd say "get a different frame size" if that was an issue, but as per original post, would he say "get a different type of bike"?
I'm not sceptical about bike fitting and once had my bike transformed by changing cleat placement BUT I do not believe that there is enough scope for anything that can be revolutionary rather than evolutionary in terms of cockpit.

Re: Gammy neck and bike fitting
Note I'm sure anti recumbency is dealt with elsewhere in the forum. I'm open to the idea but would prefer a nice long weekend of test drive before committing any Β£ to it. My original post was more to ask what happens when fitters run out of stem options I guess.

Re: Gammy neck and bike fitting
I have no doubts at all about recumbents being physiologically superior and fun, but I do have reservations about things like visibility* when turning right quickly at a T junction with cars parked on kerbs and things like that. And how you push (on foot) up a steep hill when you've failed to conquer it and bailed.pjclinch wrote: β11 Aug 2024, 8:51amAnti recumbency comes in various flavours...
There's the "that's not a proper bike" sort, hopefully not in play here, there's can't afford/have nowhere to store which is fair enough, and the most common is the assumption they must be excessively dangerous, usually by way of being invisible because they're low.
Having been riding them since around the turn of the century I can assure that they're not invisible, even the low ones. Mine has eye level at about the same height as a normal car and judging from the attention and extra overtaking space I get when I'm on it I get seen.
I don't have a flag. I lent it to a pal once while he dealt with some back problems and it came back with a flag his friends had ordered him to install because, despite the evidence of their own eyes, they decided he was invisible without it
Had a conversation with a driver once, we were both stopped, eye level was the same. It went something like this:
"isn't it dangerous down there?"
"Down where? I'm the same height as you"
"But you're so low!" (etc.)
Pete.
*On upright can edge forward, lean out, look over bonnets. Easily walk with it by your side. Etc.

Re: Gammy neck and bike fitting
Ah, interesting!
You know how there's no such thing as a silly question? What happens if you rotate the stem so that it points towards you? Is handling so compromised you'll fall off?

Re: Gammy neck and bike fitting
Thanks for the offer, but I'd rather try before spending money! The wife is extremely anti me riding a recumbent too, although I could possibly get around that...

Re: Gammy neck and bike fitting
These looks great! Has anyone seen such a bar that is significantly cheaper. (Most riser drop bars I see have about 5 millimetres of rise and I don't see the point.)
