Agreed. Leeds to Narbonne on the European Bike Express was about 29 hours. Rather more on the way back when the bus broke down. Wouldn't do it again.

'Doob' was a new word to me, so I googled it. Urban dictionary told me it's a term for 'an attractive member of the female gender'. Rolling one on a bike? That would be worth seeing!

Re: Legality of using phone while cycling

Reading further, it seems that you can be fined/get points on you account even if you're just listening to music while cycling!

Legality of using phone while cycling

A German friend tells me that in Germany you can lose your driving licence for using your phone while driving. Obviously this is a Good Thing. But apparently you can also lose your driving licence for using your phone while cycling – which is inconvenient if you want to use it for navigation. Is thi...

Bike-and-train touring

An altercation with a dog - needing stitches and antibiotics - on my last tour made me want to get home briskly from the heel of Italy. I carried on riding my usual fifty or so miles a day, but most days managed to jump on a local train for a few hours, and made it from Puglia to the Channel in nine...

Freehub Grease?

Next job – clean and lube the freehub. It's sounding a bit gritty, I have to take the wheel off anyway, and I've never seen the inside of a freehub, so… 'Don't grease the pawls!', they cry, and my instinct would be to use 3-in-1 or similar; but Shimano sell freehub-specific grease, and while I'm not...

Re: Eurovelo 8 in Greece

I rode from Athens to Patras in May/June last year, and didn't notice any sign of EV8. However, when it's 'developed', I suspect it won't be much more than a set of signposts, which you don't need because the route is fairly obvious – follow the main road. Pleasant riding, variable weather, no heavy...

Sticky shifter

The upshift on my Sora 9-speed shifter is getting a bit sluggish. It happens more in some gears than others, and the cable is fairly new, so I'm guessing the issue's with the shifter, not the cable, and could be improved with a clean-and-lube. I'm thinking, squirt some WD40 in, leave it overnight, t...

Re: Chinese Lightweight 1 person Tent

The Chinese are not stupid people and making a decent quality tent is hardly beyond their capabilities. Of course. I don't think anyone suggested that a tent is more likely to fail because it was made in China; more that a tent made to sell at about a hundred quid is more likely to fail than a simi...

When you run out of money…

I had a friend who cycled the length of South America. Reminiscing about the ride, he remarked, 'It's when you run out of money that the interesting things happen.' I'm far too cautious now to get into that kind of situation (and, it has to be said, my tours don't produce many 'interesting' stories)...

DrukAir, the flag carrier of the kingdom of Bhutan, may be able to supply you with fabulously expensive Himalayan air, which will amaze and impress all your friends. It may even be pink, like Himalayan salt.

I suspect that your Corbynista People's Republic is reluctantly working under financial constraints imposed by the Other Side. But let's keep this a (rare) politics-free zone?

Re: Winter Air

I'm a logical sort of chap ............ solstices and equinoxes .............but that doesn't really tell the whole story though I would like it to be as simple as that though I always maintain that midsummer is June21 and midwinter is Dec21. Apparently there's meteorological autumn, which is Septe...

Re: MTB toe clips - difference/advantages?

Noting that the discussion is interesting but SPDs are not for me because I have so far failed to find any footwear broad enough to fit my feet. I am happy with the toe clips on my Spa Wayfarer. This is enough to encourage me to fit toe clips to my old steel MTB. I can feel the difference and I thi...
