Col du Grand Colombier,Jura.

Stage 9 of the Tour takes in this climb(I'm sure it was featured in the Dauphine too?) and it looks a bit of a beast. From what I can get off the internet there's four ways up but the route from Culoz in the South is the classic and the route the Tour takes? My question is has anyone ridden it? We're...

We'll probably ride up to the Ford Inn from Holmfirth or park at Wassenden Head and ride a loop from there.

Re: first milestone ride hadfield to holmfirth as well as leigh-manc... and back again.

for many years i was involved with organising a TT from greenfield to meltham and back taking in some of these hills. on one occasion a rider from (IIRC) sussex entered and turned up with his fixed TT rig running 55 x 15 or so. god only knows what he did on wessenden head but he got round..!! We cl...

Re: first milestone ride hadfield to holmfirth as well as leigh-manc... and back again.

Once you leave Dunford bridge and head over towards Hade Edge you have a few options. You can turn left and follow the narrow(and quieter) Roads past Snailsden Res and along Cartworth Moor or take the steep (main) road from Hade Edge to Holmfirth.I always take the former as it's more scenic. On the r...

Re: first milestone ride hadfield to holmfirth as well as leigh-manc... and back again.

The Trans Pennine Trail runs up parallel to Woodhead Pass not Snake Pass. Any route out of Holmfirth involves hills especially if heading back Manchester way.Holme Moss,Isle of Skye Road etc.Not hard but long drags.I say not hard but if you're not a regular cyclist the two mentioned routes will come...

Re: Yorkshire's reet grand - We love Yorkshire

Yorkshire is looking stunning at the moment. We're on holiday this week staying in the Dales and doing the touristy thing (unfortunately in the car  as Mrs. Spinners doesn't cycle) and I've managed to get out for a couple of short rides. The TdF and TdY legacy is still evident with plenty of ...

Re: Cleats and Road Bikes

Walking in road type cleats (unless you use covers) damages the cleats over time and can cause them to be too loose in the clips... then you may have a 'Ewan' moment when the foot fails to stay engaged in the pedal it pulls out and you could be deposited on the road. I had a Look cleat snap 3...

Re: Does anyone know why helmets vary in price so much?

The story of the Princess and the pea comes to mind. Some people are just so precious........ Quite so. Some people just soak up and regurgitate all of the cycling cliches. So sad. Mmmm. So it's "precious" and sad that some people actually prefer to wear something that not only fits but i...

Re: Maps or GPS or both

The difficult thing with paper maps, is knowing where you are. I thought that was what maps were for ... I know within a few metres where I am.it's actually quite easy, even off road! My problem is with people who blindly follow a GPS,without looking at a map first, then when it goes wrong they don't...

Re: Maps or GPS or both

I can look at a route on a map, study it and then navigate it from memory. It's much easier on road than off as you have place names/signs etc but I rarely need to look at a map en-route.I've done this in the UK,France and now Mallorca.I can also do it off-road but it does need more time to study. It ...

Re: Maps or GPS or both

GPS's allow you to ride a route that is complex, too complex for anybody to remember if they hadnt ridden it before or are not worthy of a place on a show for the exceptionally gifted. GPS failure rates are very rare, comparable with maps getting drenched, blown away or left behind at the last stop...

Re: Maps or GPS or both

I have a Garmin Edge 820 and never use the mapping.I had a an Edge 800 previously and didn't bother with mapping either.I just prefer a map.I study where I want to go and take a map.9 times out of 10 I can do the route from memory. We were in Mallorca last week and two out of four of our group were ...
