Re: Basecamp tent
I have a Vango Beta 550XL alloy tent that I use for camping with the car. It is just under 10 kg, has masses of space so would be good for sitting out wet days, you could probably park a bike and trailer inside it and at 2 m tall there is plenty of headroom inside. It has not been tested in severe weather yet. It cost about £180. I cannot compare it with any other tent since all my other tents are/were smaller.

This is serious thread drift but according to one of the ambulance chasing lawyer sites before you do anything you need to ask an unconscious casualty's permission first and explain what you are going to do first, just in case they can hear you

I remember that Turkey was voted the best country in the world for cycle touring may be a year or two ago on one of the world touring forums so it must have some good things going for it....

Re: What 1st Aid Do You Take On Tour
AFAIK nobody has ever been prosecuted in the UK for doing some first aid wrongly and I have also been told the same by the teachers on first aid courses that I have done. Does anybody know if this is not the case?
This was about twenty years ago, with all the health and safety issues and legal requirements, I don't know many first aiders who would attempt this now, for fear of legal repercussion afterwards. In fact I'm not sure I would attempt it myself today.

This is not exactly what you are looking for but it is designed for Rohloff's chainline: Stronglight Impact R:

I can look up the BB length if you are interested.

Re: Recovery Insurance
I used my ETA insurance once. My bottom bracket disintegrated while doing a circular day trip in Herefordshire. I had my (non-smart) mobile phone with me but didn't have any numbers for local taxi companies. I phoned ETA and they had a taxi with me within an hour, the driver was friendly and the taxi was one of the big airport transfer types so easily big enough for the bike. This represented good service and a relief as far as I was concerned.
However, I understand that if you rarely stray far from home and/or you have a partner to rescue you then such insurance might not be worthwhile.

Have you checked the bottom bracket? Yank the cranks to see if there is any play.

Re: The joy of bike riding
I use thick rubber from an old inner tube for a tractor tyre. I use a cardboard template to make sure they are symmetric when marking the outline with a biro. I use two pop rivets for each flap, with washers to spread the load, because these are smaller and neater than bolts and nuts. I fitted some two years ago and they are keeping most of the filth off the drivetrains.

A friend told me that pins and needles in hands can be caused by poor blood circulation, as well as nerve damage.

Re: Tifosi cassettes?
Hopkinson have 9sp 12-36 HG400 cassettes in stock. My favourite cassette for two of my 9 speeds is a 12-36 (like you, as I read you, I don't want an 11T) but haven't found anyone who does them

Re: CAMPING
On my latest south to north tour of Wales I paid £7-12 pppn. There was a fair positive correlation between price and facilities and I considered them all good value. However, like many places, they can be busy and noisy during school summer holidays, although the one near where I live in North Wales has a lot more empty spaces than it did at this time last year.

There are some great sketches of old trikes and bikes in action around Merseyside in 1887 in this sketchbook diary. Well worth a look I think.

Hot and sunny again but I can hear thunder and a big cloud has appeared to the south so may be I will get some rain today, the lawn certainly needs it.

Re: Sticking with 9-speed?
That is interesting. I am using Shimano 9 sp casettes and RDs on two bikes and the shifting is rarely perfect despite spending time and money on adjusting cable tension, new cables, new outers, new shifters including trying non-indexed thumb shifters and trying different RDs. Alignment of the RDs looks OK but I am contemplating buying a tool to check it.
I had a quick look at the reviews of the SRAM X-5 9sp RD on CRC and noticed that few customers have complained that they are fragile and poorly made but the majority are satisfied, not that I have much faith in such reviews. Does anyone on here have experience of SRAM 9 sp shifters and RDs? Do they give more reliable shifting than Shimano's RDs?
Also it looks as if 2 x 11 gearing, with say 44 and 28T chainrings and a 11-42T casette would be a reasonable way to replace a 3 x 9 set-up, all-be-it with a bigger change in cadence when front shifting with the former than the latter.
