arnsider wrote:For what its worth, might I suggest carrying a space blanket. They are very cheap and easy to put in a saddlebag or even a pocket.
Providing you are conscious, you can either pull it over yourself or direct a helper.

For 99.999% of people riding bikes this is simply not going to happen nor is required, the women was less than 2 miles away from her destination in a densely populated area, there would have been absolutely no need to take a space blanket, would you take one to walk or cycle around the corner to the shops or library?
The victim did direct a helper and yet when it came down to it the people who should have helped her didn't, excuses, failures/inaction by the police at every avenue and because of that someone laying helplessly on their own, froze to death. If those paid to render assistance had done what they should have then a space blanket wouldn't have made a jot of difference. and it certainly wouldn't have saved them over the time it took for someone to discover her body 17 hours later.

Jam sandwich is 80s, I haven't heard that for decades.

Re: Boy 13 arrested for attempted murder of cyclist

Is this any different to using a motorvehicle to deliberately cause harm? No, yet motorists do this and indeed kill people on bikes and most don't even get a slap.

I will still buy SRAM 850 as the quality level is good, but as I need 5 chains to make up 2, for the recumbent its a significant price hike of about £25 for me, if other components follow the pattern, then the Cycling inflation is through the roof.

The price has gone up a lot because as I mentioned inflation has not being applied to many (any) of the 7/8 speed chains for years and prices have remained static despite the falling £. To save yourself money buy the Shimano IG51, they're £7 a pop, thus compared to the £12 a chain of the ones you've been buying means there's no price increase.

Certainly 8-speed, single-speed etc. would not be immune.

China is such a den of IP theft that in certain markets (not the UK), it can be difficult to find products which are NOT counterfeit.

Here's some fake Shimano HG73's currently on sale on popular cybercrime website, Ebay.co.uk:

Dreadful rubbish, unbranded/cheap chains are one thing, but these fakes are awful rubbish and will wear out quickly.

Here's a fraud facilitated by Amazon

'prime' delivery

A few years ago tesco were selling some copycat hyperglide chains, they looked extremely similar even close up, the imprinted name on the chain itself I can't quite remember but it was only slightly dissimilar in name to the 'hyperglide' branding. They were selling them for £4IIRC, didn't buy one because I thought it would just be rubbish but was surprised to see them in a Tesco store.

ONS are no longer independent, haven't been for a long time, shils for the criminals in Westminster and continually moving the goalposts as to how a death is attributed. The rules as to how a death is attributed have been changed like never before in history and never done for other respiratory diseases.
A death by any cause within 28 days of a positive test is now counted as a 'covid' death, this is ludicrous and indeed unlawful, it completely ignores how a death should be coded by underlying cause, it also ignores the huge false positives of those deceased that were tested. Using 45x cycles is insane, it increases the chances of false positives massively, also deceased needn't even need to have a test to be pronounced a 'covid' death.

There's no need for the person signing off the death certificate to have even seen the deceased before or after death, it can be via video, we already know that just a single symptom (that could mean something else completely different) or a guess is enough for covid to be put down on a death certificate, this is explained in the governments own notes regarding such. "if before death the patient had symptoms typical of COVID19 infection, but the test result has not been received, it would be satisfactory to give ‘COVID-19’ as the cause of death."
That in itself is just absolute BS. As is pronouncing a covid death when the deceased had pneumonia, again this was changed by the government before the summer.
Government have now abolished the form regards cremation such that relatives cannot contest cause of death, why would government do that, we know thousands of people have complained just on social media alone regards covid being falsely put as cause of death on a DC, none of that has ben addressed.
That's before we even get to the absolute fact that there is no isolated virus, there is no SARS-COV-2, the image is from the CDC documents in July. No-one has isolated it, so basically it IS a simplistic test for a number of viruses containing the same RNA strands.

The actual deaths are so massively out, multiple times over and deliberately manipulated the rules regarding how you count deaths it's unlawful and is simply done to prop up the narrative.

Luckily I have good stocks.
But KMC 8 speed chains here from Bike 24 at a tiny whisker over 6 EUROS.

https://www.bike24.com/p2328749.html?menu=1000,2,83

Fairly hefty postage of course, but can be offset by savings on other stuff, or indeed just by buying several chains at a time - and leave chainreaction to their margin boosting.

£6.31

I'd rather have the Shimano IG51 over that Z8 having used both, the Shimano is cheaper and widely available in UK cheaper including postage.

Re: Price of Chains

Shimano 8 speed are under £7 including postage, but not seeing the problem tbh for something that costs so little, prices were really under true value for a long while and hadn't shifted for 7/8 speed so around the £10-£12 mark is probably where it should have been anyway if they'd have increased in line with inflation over the years.

The one that impressed me was one that Grant Sinclair (nephew of Clive) who came up with the iris etrike. I don't know how many he has actually made but ordering one was a non starter for me as it doesn't remotely look like there's any actual production happening. First and only person that appears to have one is an 83 y.o gent, I know of no other units anywhere.
The first ones I saw on his website had a triple chainset and were meant to have Shimano touring A530 pedals attached.

Now, anybody with an iota of experience of searching for people reported missing knows that full use must be made of any remaining daylight. But this isn't an MFH report: there should be no question of searching for somebody reported as having been found. Nor were they found in remote moorland: no need for the finder to spell out SOS in the snow for the benefit of the helicopter. This was in Kingston-upon-Hull - according to wiki a city of 250,000 people. The simple point is that there were insufficient personnel available to cope with demand. Rationing by queuing has led to this death.

You're taking the police line that there was insufficient personnel, we know police lie to cover their arses. I KNOW for a fact that police officers were in the near vicinity doing not very much, something that was very low priority. They were doing a low level policing job 10 minutes walk away at around the same time the call was made, so why weren't police pulled from a low priority scenario of people exiting from a sports arena to one of high priority?
The insufficient personnel just doesn't hold water, police standing around doing pretty much nothing a few minutes away is not insufficient personnel!
if they couldn't attend why didn't they call for an ambulance at least?

Humberside Police are a disgrace.

It was stated that the 'finder' attempted to help the lady stand but she could not because of an injured ankle.
Injured or not someone who is collapsed, whether you suspect they are drunk or not, needs some medical attention. How would a non-qualified person (or even qualified one for that matter) know if there is another underlying cause for the collapse.... diabetes, epilepsy etc.....
And having left the scene to find help/ring for help why would you not return with some blankets / duvet or similar to keep the person warm.

The person reporting to the police was quite elderly if I recall correctly, maybe the distance back was too much for them, maye they thought having called the police they would get to the scene before they possibly could.

Ride it and ignore the usual types who suggest death will come to you and then want to steal the shoes off your feet
Keep checking the frame, if you hit some hard bumps it might well crack at some point, until that happens you won't die
As for comparing coke cans, again, more insane nonsense!

But, your bike, your call, if it isn't worth a lt to you then take it to the scrap metal recycling and get another alu frame for not very much via ebay/gumtree, there's loads.

Re: woman freezes to death after falling from bike

Humberside police are culpable in her death, the cemetery isn't that big, there's not a lot of ground to cover the whole area and there's few paths, the police haven't said sorry because they don't believe they've done anything wrong, just usual waffle regards making changes yada yada.

The lies regards their officers doing the "very best" they could is just outlandish and perverse. No-one did their very best, starting with the non prioritising/failure to respond in time, failure to do a proper search, failure to provide trained officers and equipment.

I was at the stadium not half a mile away for an international RL game with my folks and exited about 4:30pm in the opposite direction (to the cemetery) though we've often gone past that way to the ground. There would have only being a handful of police at the match as it's not soccer, I can't see how there were not available units to attend in the proper timescale, there was nothing else going on at the time that required excess police and the few police at the ground would have been a 10 minute walk away if they had taken a very slow walk.

1*8 gearing Dirt cheap. Reliable. Relatively light weight. A big enough gear range to commute in a hilly city.

Never as popular as they deserved. People perhaps thinking more gears was better.

Even the Ridgeback Velocity with an RRP of £299 in 2002 and the base Specialized Sirrus models from the turn of the century exceeded the EBC bikes IMO. The Velocity had a 28x34 low, 3x8 rapid fire gearing, suspension seatpost, sealed headset, sealed cartridge BB. Ridgeback had by far the biggest range of useable hybrids for all pockets, including women specific models before most of the other players and at great prices.

More gears ARE better, a 1x8 isn't enough for all situations with regards hills, lower gears which the EBC lacked compared to the competition are even better, the Ridgeback models were lighter too, maybe you weren't aware of how other manufacturers had already exceeded what EBC were doing?
