clearly a well designed frame then. They used to sell mudguards without stay releases too.The World has changed; not everyone has caught up yet.
Some those were mid front fork mounted and made of celluloid, so the 'guards/tire gap would open or the guards would shatter.
Frangible mudguards, a happy (if unintended) side of effect of material choice.
Now we have tough mudguards that don't shatter, just jam. :)

Re: Mudguard design

Cloroplast (corugated plastic signage material), makes mudguards,
here where the political season is measured in years, campaign signs
are a free source of material.

Brucey wrote: 11 Nov 2023, 7:03pm actually doesn't the singe-pulley RD date it a bit earlier?
The single pulley was fine with a 13-16 5 speed block,
if you needed a cog bigger than 16, you were told to train harder. :)

Re: Anyone still using this stuff?

Calling a Valentino 'orrible rubbish, is an insult to rubbish.

The Gran Turismo, is Gran Trashmo, here in the States.

You fixed Campag from that era, by putting it in the shed (lots of unused Gran Trashmo
mechs are available at vintage bike swaps, always good for a laugh)
and buying Suntour.

Re: Bent front drop out

gregoryoftours wrote: 7 Nov 2023, 8:29pm Some old fork dropouts are made to fit a smaller diameter axle, I suspect that this is one of them and has been filed incompletey to fit a 9mm. I think that you can file the entrance to the slot a bit to make getting the wheel in easier no problem.

Those look to be Long Shen dropouts, so 9mm wide.

Report back at the end of the first year, how many parts you have changed out,
to make it suit you.

I bought 1 new assembled bike, never did it again, when I went to sell it a couple years
later very few parts were original. (bike was too small, don't buy bikes at chain bike shops)

It might not quite fit with the OP's Christmas plans, but there's something to be said for testing a smart 'phone first and seeing how it stacks up against needs...

Jonathan
Wahoo made a remote display for a phone cycling app, an idea before its time. it turned out.

Re: Square Taper BB

Read all the warning info on the Herse page, quote below.

The entire bottom bracket is made from stainless steel and aluminum, so it won’t rust. However, this also makes the spindle more brittle than Cromoly. The SKF bottom brackets meet the ‘City/Trekking Bike’ standards for fatigue resistance, but not the highest ‘Racing Bike’ standards to which other Rene Herse components are designed. Many other high-end bottom brackets also use stainless steel spindles, and SKF bottom brackets perform fine under most riders, including very strong ones. However, if you tend to break components, we suggest you look elsewhere for a bottom bracket.

Steel Abus 6 minutes to cut with a grinder, LiteLock X1, 17 minutes to cut with a grinder.

3 days for cloth tape, easy to wrap, but adding the 3 coats
of shellac, 1 coat a day.

Shellac here comes as a jar of insect shells (lac bugs) you mix with alcohol.
