I have one of the early alfine 11 hub gears. Quite early on, I found the gear slipping in gear two and eventually gear one was in gear 2 position. I consoled myself that I had a 10 speed hub that could tackle almost any hill.
I tried changing the cable many times and minute adjustment on the cable length. Nothing doing
I attempted to change the cable and the cable was stuck. I opened the changer to take the cable out and broke the changer.
I got a second hand one and fixed the gear system on the bike. It now works perfectly after seven years.
Coincidence of were some changers faulty?

Re: Larger sprocket (27t) for Nexus hub
I think the 26 tooth sprocket is for a sturmey 8 speed. It has 6 notched and nexus has 3. I don't think it will fit.

Re: 2023 touring plans
I too have just returned from a tour and am already planning a tour.
Train to Fishguard. -- Carmarthen -- along the Brecon cycle way
To Abergavenny
Hereford to Ludlow
Over Wenlock Edge
back of the Long Mynd
Chirk
Oswestry --over the canal viaduct which I can't spell
Llangollen
Along the Dee valley to Carrog
And end in Prestatyn
A lot of what I don't know with some familiar places. Roll on April

Re: What would be different, better or worse for touring?
I have just done a 300 mile tour- the Mercian way .Here is how I charged my Bosch 500 battery
1st night did 35 miles ---in the pub near campsite
2nd day 45 miles. I had battery anxiety with 10 miles to go, so a half hour in Cirencester Neros. Evening I charged it pub next to campsite
3rd night in an electric hookup on site. the owner didnt mind when asked.
4th night after 48 miles I charged in pub
5th night in recreation room on site
6th night 40 miles- Brigenorth costa coffee.for 30 mins then at campsite an electric hookup.
last night in a shelter on the site.
I have just bought a 6amp charger and it takes 2 and a half hours to charge from empty. I also bought an electric caravan hookup to convert to an ordinary plug
I hope my experience helps although it does not directly answer the question
By the way, except for a couple of grotty bits, this tour is in my top 5. I never met anyone else doing it. Next Ayr to Scarborough

Cycle parking in Liverpool
The cycle parking for ordinary people seems to have disappeared from the city centre and been replaced with bays for hire scooters.
So much for being a city for cyclists. Also two miles of of quality cycle lane have been taken away recently .
I'm now pessimistic about cycling gains, especially the vitriol eminating from the press at the moment.
A recent public discussion in the Guardian -of all places -made out cyclists to be thoughtless barstoats. Maybe some are, but I can't help thinking now that car that brushed my pannier or the person who took the effort to wind his window down and shouted " get off the road you owld fat tawt" were thinking of me as a lesser being.
Yes I am overweight. Yes I am 66years old. I am not a pregnant fish or had done any thing wrong.
I'm just another road user. That's all.

Re: Ancient lanes and old main roads
I thought I would revisit the Barrow to Whitby route this summer, but reroute along the upper Lune valley from Tebay, mainly along the old A685. This was the route before the road was rebuilt along the defunct Stainmore rail line. It was a fine ride. There are a couple of crossings over the newer fast road.
There is a short cycle track alongside the main road just after Newbiggin. I went through the gorgeous Ravenstonedale village and onto the Fat Lamb pub on the Sedbergh -Kirkby Stephen road.
The only downside going into Kirkby Stephen was having to cycle a mile or so on the main road.
I also could not find a campsite near Barnard Castle that would take tents so had to divert from Tan Hill down Arkengarthdale to Richmond.
What a glorious run.
I saw one fully laden cyclist in the five day tour, but saw hundreds of carbon fibre lightweights who amused themselves by making quips like" I would give you a tow but........." and "you got the kitchen sink in them bags lad?" Little did they know I had an Ortleib folding bowl in my bag so technically I did!

Nowhere on the c & c website does it say no facilities therefore no tents.
I suspect that this is the case.

Re: Camping and Caravan Club sites opening this summer
I tried to book into Clitheroe C & C on Friday, after a small tour of the Dales.
It was if I was bringing the Black Death to the campsite.
I assured the officials that I didn't need facilities - I had brought folding washbasin and adequate toilet facilities.
She didn't say" no tents "but said there was no room on the campsite.
I was standing to the small tent area which was empty,
I was very annoyed and said she was going against her charter.
Over the last few years I have noticed large areas of c&c tent areas taken up with hard standing for caravans and motorhomes eg Rhayader and Scarborough, the latter put me next to the dogshit field and the former 3 meters away from the A470.
I wouldn't be surprised if they merged with the Caravan Club
I did get in at Edisford Bridge site a mile away.
Thank heavens - I had run out of cycling miles.

Re: Recommendation for touring bike
There is a quality touring bike with discs. It does have bar end shifters. Its cromoly.
The bike is Evans own on ebay for £680. That is the price of a Surly frame. It has mudguards and a tubus rack.
Its called the Dacite 1
I think it will make a super tourer.

London to Oxford following the Thames
For eons I have toured in northern England ,Scotland and Wales.
I feel it is time I went somewhere else. So I thought I might catch a train to London and cycle and camp my way back to Merseyside.
Trouble is I don't know the London -Thames valley area.
I know the Pennines and the Southern Uplands like my saddle, but I need advice on this escapade.
Are there hundreds of gates along this route?
Are the off-road sections good enough for 35c tyres?
Is it too built up to enjoy?
Is it safe to go through Eton? I've heard there are thugs there.
I plan to have my first night at Cookham Lock campsite- will I make it?
Any info will be better than I know now.
Thanks

Re: Coast & Castles - Recommended sights & tea shops?
The barn at Beal is a great place for at least four reasons.
1] Good food
2] great coffee
3] you can camp here and have supper and a cooked breakfast
4] Soon there will be an evening bar and you can have a nightcap if you are that way inclined.
It is a mile or so down the Lindisfarne road from the A1.
Will revisit this summer for sure
