Landsurfer - My entry was meant to be lighthearted -- as if you could classify people by the fuel they use! What a silly idea on my part.
There are no such people as GAS people.
What could be better than sausages and beans with grandson!

Above is a really good offer for the larger Trangia 25 - you don't need a kettle, it takes less time boiling water in a pan. The pans are non stick and clean without detergent.
Always take the frying pan - it is the lid, cuts down boil times and you might want to fry something!
Don't be put off the Trangia by the GAS people, GAS people are noisy like their stoves are always in a hurry and always want to do 100 miles a day. Touring is about enjoying yourself.
You can buy meths in any small town and time does not matter on a camp site.
It only takes 8 mins for two cups of water and 3-4 with gas. Whats four minutes?
I have a small one! for myself and a big one when camping with friends.I love em
Oh the model number is 25 / 5

Re: Hub dynamos
My experience of dynohubs:
NEVER attempt to repair a SON hub yourself because you will wreck it. I did and I'm a pretty good bike mechanic!!
Secondly - the higher end Shimano ones are brilliant and cost less in Germany.
Thirdly - I put a B und Muller cyo 60 lux light onto MY old Raleigh with an old sturmey dynohub. Its as bright as a the Shimano hub, as the output of the Sturmey is 1.8 watt and the light is 1 watt.

Decathlon cheap tents
I was in Decathlon in Stockport today and noticed they had the well regarded Vango Apex 200 - about 1.7 kg for 80 ish pounds and the Quechua Ultralight 2 pro for 69 pounds. Bargains indeed - but not for me as my tent collection is too large for one person!

Re: Disc brakes on a tourer?
I used disc brakes all summer which are fitted to on my new bike. I don't think I will be returning to v brakes again. There is no competition. I have so much more confidence, especially in the wet and over mountain passes.

Re: that the 'ultimate commuter' is back
I got a 20" Subway 8 yesterday with horizontal dropouts. I could not get the back wheel off or fit a rack. The brake caliper had obviously been fitted after the back wheel had been put on!! I was spitting feathers and fearing the worst.
I took it back this morning and they exchanged it for a vertical dropout one - no questions asked. If you cant take the back wheel off its not fit for purpose - unless you dont get flats or never ..wear your tyre out. If you have a look you might find the bolts on the eccentric bottom bracket are way too short and positively dangerous.
You must take it back if you have one of these.

Re: that the 'ultimate commuter' is back
These bikes are £319 for the next 24 hours. I just ordered one. Hope there are some left. The excellent mechanic person at my store says he has been rushed off his feet with orders. The spec is terrific. Never had hydraulic discs before though. Hope they are alright.

Re: Sturmey Archer Dynohub - LED bulbs?
Dear Messers Shimano SRAM and Schmidt,
Modern dynohubs have too much output for 1W led headlights. I think there is a case fow 1.5W dynohubs and so less resistance on the front wheel.

I have a combination of a Sturmey AG dynohub and a B&Muller cyo. - Brilliant to see on unlit roads
Grab one while this low price lasts http://www.rosebikes.co.uk/article/b--m-lumotec-iq-cyo-senso-plus-60-lux/aid:317448

Re: Narrow axle forks question - dynohub?
I use a Sturmey dynohub with a B&M 60 lumens cyo and it works brilliantly.
The output of the generator is 1.8 W and the cyo LED demands only 1W, which means that 3W generators designed for halgen bulbs are overpowered when using 1w LEDs. The drag on the Sturmey hub is not bad either.
This saved me £130, which makes me very happy.

Re: St Helens to Shropshire
It always puzzles me why you would want to cycle down any major road, with lorries and cars constantly overtaking when by looking at on OS map you can always find another route. Its more interesting, safer and sometimes quicker.
Unless of course you like having 40 tonners on your shoulder for half a mile, waiting until he can overtake!
