Re: Winter tyres

Compound makes no difference on ice, neither does tread. You may as well be using slicks. Studs are the only defense. I did an 8 mile mountain loop today, including a cat 4 climb and passed many riders turning back, because the trails were too icy. I however, had the single speed set up for exactly ...

Probably not and steering would differ depending on which way you turned

I'm actually considering building a 3x1 for my next project - just for fun 8)

There ARE Bikes with a single sided chainstay. Not sure if any of them are Dales though.

Seen a few belt drive ones too

Go on, do it. You know you want too.

I love my single-speed

Re: Cannondale Hooligan

There have been lefty Dales in the MTB world for some years now. I don't see much point in them either -apart from less weight and mechanics (in the suspension versions) but all the owners I've talked to - swear by them. Owning some Dales has always made you a bit of slave to their specific parts - ...

Re: Puncture proof tyres

The closest I have ever come to "Puncture Proof" tyres was the Panasonic (Panaracer) RibMo I never once had a puncture in 10,000+ miles, despite having to pull just about everything out of them, including screws, nails, pop-rivets... I even took them off-road once  When they eventuall...

Re: Headset advice

I prefer a split race myself, as they are easier to remove, when checking the steerer and crown, or swapping forks over, but retaining the same headset

Knowing how most BMW's perform in the snow - you should have offered to help them

Re: Shimano XT 780 Hubs.

Quite shocked at some of the results in this thread. I am not familiar with XT 780 hubs, but I would have thought they would better than that. I have a pair of 26" XC-717s with Deore FH-M525'a that did 6,000 muddy miles with no servicing (I'm lazy in that respect) before the rear started to giv...

Re: Just found these....

Look good, though I would maybe prefer it if the mounting bar was metal, not carbon. Your first impressions are good? Would be interested in future feedback as well. I have a couple of minoura units stashed somewhere. To be honest, I don't think the bars are carbon fibre - more like "carbon fi...

Re: 753 changing dropouts

If you are going to be putting new dropouts in, it may be worth considering doing it in such as way that you can use "Swap-outs" to change between the two - like the DMR ones on my Kinesis Virtue (Pictured with horizonal dropouts) http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g249/threevok1/Picture%20...
