Re: Deterring mobile phone use

... Why does the law forbid using an phone while the engine is running? ... I'm not sure where this crept in but I wasn't aware that the relevant legislation included that provision. :? Is there a link? I think that is 'just' a safety slogan. "Engine on = phone off" As a slogan I think it...

If I were being pedantic I'd say it could do with squaring up to be perfect(the roof line's doing the damage)

If the roof were made square .. the door would be for drunks. 8)

Re: Europe-wide Route Maps -

Try the OSMAnd app .. looks to show the bicycle routes (when in bicycle mode).. even at a small scale.
This is the same base data as https://www.opencyclemap.org/ and map.me i.e OSM.

I have travelled with a small backpack for some weeks ... never again. You might be different, comes down to personal capability. I even reject camel backs, we all have major sweat glands on our backs that I'd rather leave clear to do their job.

It's not just you, but there's a heck of a lot of us who cycle to travel or tour without pushing it close to the edge every single ride. For example, I don't really understand trying for a top speed unless you've got a stonking tailwind. My top speed on a bicycle is 78 km/h ... stonking tailwind ye...

 A large dark tree has fallen across the road. Who will blame the tree for not being hi vis? Answer .. the driver must drive according to the conditions. Yes it helps if things have all these 'safety' things. But then people buy dark cars and trucks and no one picks on them. A long time ago...

Re: Touring High Tech or Low Tech

A 'normal' GPS is a receiver .. like a radio. You would have to send your GPS track to a web page or someone to display where you have been. Or you could use the track from your phone - and send that to someone. In either case you need some form of connection - phone or wifi. The alternative is a SP...

Motorcyclists; ware ear plugs to protect their hearing from wind noise. have and use mirrors. Relying on the noise of a vehicle usually works for pedestrians and bicycle riders... but some of these 'hybrid' cars are very quite - the original tyres have low rolling resistance that reduces noise, the ...

As to the branches: sleep under any tree other than a Beech, which are notorious for shedding branches. Ash are worse imo. We have mature Ash and Beech trees in the garden. Beech have never shed a branch, Ash have and big ones as well. Gum trees (Eucalyptus ) kill 1 or more people per year in Austr...

Theoretically... without numbers. Radiation. The universe is a cold place. A very cold place. You radiate heat out ... proportionate to the temperature difference between you and whatever 'it' is. So, if you block your view of the night sky, you reduce your heat loss by a fair amount. Convection. Wi...

Re: Clothing

Avoid cotton clothing. Jeans in particular - they take forever to dry after washing! Synthetic clothing lasts about twice as long as 'natural' fibres. The disadvantage is smells ... bugs growing in your clothing. A bit of antiseptic will kill the bugs .. bleach is a traditional bug killer but not li...
