Re: Disagreement with AGM resolutions

Dissuading the use cars is a lot more difficult :-

- Travel by flying is mainly a choice : a whim : avoidable : part of the mass-tourism frenzy with associate bragging rights.

- Travel by motor vehicle is now so deeply embedded in the way we live that it will probably take a generation or two to change peoples thinking/planning and the way we live i.e. (motorised personal travel as my right and ignore the disbenefits ) OR ( I have to do it, because I live here and work there ). . . .

One part of the overall problem is that travel is hugely energy intensive. Where will all the energy come from to replace fossil-fuel ?
( . . . . particularly if we follow this trend of driving ever larger&heavier vehicles [ more bragging rights  ] )

"Hide/ignore the bad stuff : out-of-sight : abroad : near the poor people : whatever . . . . and let the future generation sort it out ( if any left )".

Thank for bringing that to my attention.
It's great to see Cycling UK taking a principled stand on this.
Surely, people must understand that burning massive amounts of fossil-fuels to fulfil our every whim is environmentally unsustainable ( and inexcusable ).

One might expect that folks who tour around on bicycles would be very aware of their (low) environmental impact and would likely seek to minimise their use of fuel-burning motors to assist their experiences.

Re: Membership rates

Sorry if I have naffed up the flow. TC.
I split this out of the general membership topic because of the following - which seemed to be the critical decision point.

Re: 17 year old calls us out...

I found this radio 4 program rather worthwhile. It is nearly an hour long, but somehow kept my attention for the whole duration.

"The 17-year-old campaigner Greta Thunberg tells the story of her whirlwind year, which took her across the Atlantic twice as she went to speak to the UN General Assembly. . . . . etc. . . . "

Ahem, well it's us that vote for them .

Equivalent to blaming the manufacturers & producers, when it is us consumers making the buy/not-to-buy decision .

To get out of this one we all have to take more personal responsibility for our choices.
AND
We need ( to vote for ) politicians who show us how to live environmentally sustainable lives
AND
We need the "circular economy" where individuals and organisation cannot just pass on or ignore the problems that they generate.
Oh, AND
An economic system that does fully account for environmental damage caused.

This is all entirely possible. . . . . but we still have our heads in the sand . .. blaming everyone else.

Get a grip folks - this isn't a rehearsal.

Re: Lockdown Nostalgia

Now I'm just barely remembering how the early lockdown days seems like some unreal fantasy.

Loads of people out walking and cycling on the country lanes, with everyone smiling and greeting each other.
Hardly a motor vehicle to be seen/heard/smelt and those drivers that were out behaving very carefully(*).
A paradise found and re-lost.

* Some outrageous exceptions alas !

Re: 17 year old calls us out...

As our own "leaders" have comprehensively failed to show us how to live an environmentally sustainable lifestyle ( at a personal level ), perhaps we should follow the example of these fine fellows in Afghanistan :-

What the heroin industry can teach us about solar power

OTOH. Perhaps we should only vote for persons who can demonstrate a sustainable lifestyle ?

Re: Coronavirus: GPs to prescribe cycling in new obesity strategy [BBC News]

I agree TC ( of course ).

The trend in "normal living" over the decades has been to remove physical activity from daily life.

The monstrous "elephant-in-the room" is (perceived) need to move around in 1+tonne metal boxes to achieve normal living functions.
Everyone now plans their lives expecting to travel around a lot, using motorised transport.
This has certain interesting consequences . . .

Cycling for TRANSPORT elegantly integrates some beneficial physical effort into daily life without having to find significant additional time to do an additional activity.

However, we are up against a whole system that is invested in perpetuating the status quo. . . . .. deeper on down

Coronavirus: GPs to prescribe cycling in new obesity strategy [BBC News]

Of course, it's been bleedin' obvious to us lot for decades that :-
- active lifestyles = GOOD
- sedentary lifestyles = BAD
. . . maybee, something to do with us animals evolved for being active versus "modern life" replacing all physical activity with fossil-fuelled machinery.

No need to move. . . just press a button and blob-out [ and stuff your face with highly processed sweet fat to blot out the mental anguish from that disconnect ].
