Re: Tools to borrow?

Sur(e)ly  the bigger question is has your frame been faced?
Not matter what tool you use to fit the headset (and I favour the wood and threaded rod press myself) if your headtube is out whack then your press, diy or not, is not going to get the cups square to each other.
The same with your BB shell, which is more important with EBB cups and less so with a trad square taper BB.

There are few bike co-ops near me in London who have these type of tools and you can "rent" a bench and get some advice at the same time.

Edit: The star nut doesn't need a tool either, it's a fairly crude device and provided it's put in square to the eye then is good enough IME.
If your crown race is split it's even easier than a non split crown race should go fairly easily.

good luck

Re: Odd old Dawes? 1-Down? What is this?

braindrain, I had to calc chainring sizes on a build and found this to be accurate.
https://bicycles.stackexchange.com/ques ... r-of-teeth

scroll down the page till you get to the section that starts.

"EDIT:
I posted this question on math.se, and got an interesting answer, which basically confirms"

Essentially you only need a few figures to calculate it yourself, teeth, pitch and then divide by PI to get the diameter.
You could do this calc for your existing chainring and then double check it against the chainring. Also this is to the tip of the chainring so what you actually need if you're considering clearance for FD or chainstay etc.

actually I just ran the above for 48 and 46 and it looks like 8mm in diameter so only 4mm in radius between 48/46 teeth.

teeth pitch Circum PI Diameter
48 12.75 612 3.14159 194.80
46 12.75 586.5 3.14159 186.69
8.12mm difference diameter
4.05mm difference radius
good luck

Re: The way ahead - Rohloff or Electronic derailleurs?

I'm fairly sure I read over on the thorn forum in the Rohloff section that they were initially designed and intended for MTB use.

Re: Compressionless cables ?

please correct me if I'm wrong but I think they're only really required for mechanical non hydro disc brakes?
I have them fitted on two bikes with mechanical discs, never had non compressionlss but I've read discs with normal cables can and often do feel mushy.

Have you seen this?
youtube.com/watch?v=8aBa3sGUUhs
It specifically mentions older Shimano/Sram levers and these brakes.

Re: Alfine 8 hub gear cable catching sprocket

Have you come across this
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/carbon- ... 46486?mt=8
https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... calculator

I guess it works like guitar tuners on your smart phone, it uses the microphone to determine the pitch of your belt.

It's produced by Gates so is legit.
good luck
