www.alpe-adria-radweg.com/
A very informative website

There is also an alternate route that cuts off at Tarvisio and goes through Slovenia. It is more challenging, but quite beautiful

Re: Touring with an electric bike?

On the mainland many people are touring with ebikes.
It does require planning and as mentioned above, a removable battery is much more convenient, and perhaps an extension cord.
You should look at the specs more. A 250 kw battery would weigh several thousand pounds
The motor most likely is 250 watts and the battery can be anywhere from 350 wh to 1,000 wh. You would want the most powerful charger permitted for the battery to cut down on charging times. These can be from 2-6 amp.
Most places especially campsites usually have no problem with charging, just be polite about it

Re: Eurovelo 8 Italy Po valley and Adriatic and AIDA BI20

Just taking a quick look at the route, it seems that they take a lot of detours to avoid traffic. The route is probably twice as long. There are a number of roads that are quite busy, some with truck traffic, though only for a few kilometres. Unfortunately, many of the Eurovelo routes must follow roads for such an undertaking.
There area number of cycling paths and more opening up everyday.
A convenient path is the: https://www.alpe-adria-radweg.com/. If this interests you. it also has an alternate route through Slovenia..
For other bike routes, sorrily most of the websites are in Italian only, but this is a helpful site: https://www.bikeitalia.it/

If you're near the mountains, ski resort towns have a loads of free parking. Usually smaller, tourist oriented towns will offer free parking.

At a time when flying is being discouraged, what a crazy decision. I can fly from my local airport (Southend) to Bordeaux in just over an hour. Easyjet loves bikes because they are a good earner.
I watched a story where the Italian Frecce HS line now has a route from Paris to Milan. I believe the direct competition has made the TGV more efficient wary. BTW, Frecce does not take unpacked bikes

Re: Are touring bikes old fashioned?

I built my "touring bike" from frame a few years ago. And I also considered tech vs parts availability vs ease of maintenance.
First thing, I would never consider bring major spare parts like hubs, rotors, etc.
In the end, I went with rim brakes for easy adjustments (carry an extra cable) and pads can be found anywhere as opposed to disc brake pads, where there are dozens and dozens of types.
I also went with a 3 X 9 set up, because not sure if the other continents will carry 10-11-12 speed chains.
I chose 700c wheels, because 26" is becoming rarer and rarer.
The 27.5" and 29" are fine, but remote areas, if they have those sizes, will probably be in MTB knobby type
I know there will be some disagreement from other members, but these are the decisions I made and why.

My parts kit contains, cables, brake pads, spokes, lube, spare tubes, tyre.
Of course depending on my destination
Many tourers don't consider fashion when they plan a trip, but some do

Re: Cyclist-hater refuses to move and says its illegal to cycle on this path??? (PICS INSIDE)

There are haters on all sides. The pedestrians will purposely block the cyclists, like the cyclists will purposely block traffic on the road. It's an ugly circle

Re: E-Bike Battery Safety?

It's not lumping, it's the quality of the battery. I have not heard of any Original Bosch, Shimano, Brose batteries catching fire. As soon as you go with the asian brands, the risk is much greater.

Many E-bikes/scooters sold today are the cheaper asian brands with unknown origins. People do not want to spend a lot of money, so they buy the bikes online, like ebay, Aliexpress or maybe the supermarket. Some riders even go as far as replacing the battery cells themselves to save money.
Lithium power cells are no joke and require the utmost respect

Re: Front derailleur changing smoothly enough?

Looks like it works well enough. If you want to tweak it, you can adjust the height and angle of the der to see if you get better results. Just be careful with adjusting height as you may need to adjust the cable afterwards.

Re: Is it too soon to be planning for 2022?

It is never too soon. I plan about 5 trips a year. I only go on 1 or 2, but planning is a joy. With that, I have knowledge of dozens potential trips and destinations, ready to go
Plus, what else is there to do on dark winter days, other than unnecessary maintenance on your bikes?

Re: flixbus

Have not used Flix bus yet, but I did a fair bit of research. The advantages are: cheap fares, they go to destinations that do not have train stations. Negatives: They can be unbearingly slow and only about half their routes take bicycles, but you can see online which. Those that take bikes, sell out quickly

I ended up looking at american bags for their wide girth. I ended up with a Kelty Cosmic (L). A good three season bag at a reasonable price. I am quite satisfied with it
Thanks' these look good, is there much room for feet? pictures can be deceiving but they do look a wee bit tight at the bottom
What did you end up going with? Would like to know with your impressions
As a side note, do not forget a well insulated sleeping pad. I am amazed how many people believe a piece of plastic sheeting/tarp is enough for cool weather camping.

Re: Cycle touring: time to ditch the smart phone?

The pluses of a smartphone:
Emergency phone calls, stay in touch. Sat Nav, contact accommodations, quick photos and videos, weather forecasts, tour guide, bike repair reference, first aid reference, library, torch, online gear ordering, and the most common use for a smartphone; posting pictures of your food

Negatives: Whatever somebody posted above
