Re: How does a rack like this fit a bike?

I have a mountain bike with no mount points, and use the snappily-named Axiom Journey Uni Fit Mark 3 . It attaches to the rear skewer and seatstays. It looks pretty neat and I think it supports up to 50kg. The price seems to have gone up 25% since I bought mine, though. http://www.halfords.com/cycli...

Re: Dry lube recommendations needed

I know very little about lubes, as I've only ever tried two. So make of this what you will... I tried a light lube, which was perfect when the chain was clean, but it got gunked up fairly quickly. The ground here is quite sandy and dusty when it's dry, and cleaning the chain was a total pain....

Re: Ocado driver nearly hits car and bike

Yeah... Incredible to think that could have been the last thing the cyclist saw... I'd be really interested to know the outcome of this. According to the article, the video got over 7,000 views on YouTube. But I can't find it, so I wonder if it's been taken down for legal reasons while the case is o...

Re: Minor Hit and Run

Please report this to the police! Car/bike accidents are under-reported, and even it it just means that there's an official record of the incident, it all lends weight to the argument that cyclists need better protection from dangerous drivers. Glad you're okay -- it must have been an absolutely ter...

Ocado driver nearly hits car and bike

I just came across this video from a few weeks back showing an Ocado van speeding down a country lane, nearly taking out a cyclist and hitting an oncoming car (that was clearly visible before the overtake). Absolutely shocking driving. Ocado say they are "investigating... to ensure this...

Re: Ortlieb panniers - which colour?

They look nice in any colour! But I went for fluoro-yellow just to (hopefully) increase my visibility on the road. After I got hit by a car a few years back, I've become a bit OTT with fluoro gear, multiple lights, and high-conspicuity tape covering my bike!

Re: How to remove freehub body?

Brilliant -- thanks Brucey! I sprayed in some WD-40, loosened it up and left it overnight, and it seems to have done the trick! :D Given that the pawls aren't load-bearing, I assume it was sensible to use WD-40...? I have some light chain oil, but... wouldn't that be a bit viscous for tiny little pa...

How to remove freehub body?

The pawls in my Joytech D142 freehub are sticking, so I want to take the hub apart for cleaning. I posted another thread asking about the tools I'd need, and have watched lots of YouTube videos showing different types of hub, so I thought I was fully prepared. But my hub doesn't seem to be quite lik...

Re: NICE advice

IS the car is in retreat? Nah -- it's Orwellian Newspeak from the Ministry of Truth. Looks doubleplusgood on paper, eh? Re-allocate road space to support physically active modes of transport Remove bus-stop lay-bys and widen the pavement. Paint bike symbols in the gutter every 100 metres. Restrict ...

Re: Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy safety review: call for evidence

One simple and massively effective action would be to stop putting cyclists on pavements, which is safe for neither cyclists nor pedestrians. Either properly designed, constructed and maintained segregated cycle paths or on the roads with properly constrained motor vehicular speeds. Definitely wort...

Re: Let drivers know you're in trouble

The most important thing is to be aware that you have been seen. If you were moving, I'd try to come to a stop safely, whilst looking around as much as possible -- rapid head movement seems to give drivers some indication that something is about to happen... If you were unable to move, making eye-co...

Re: Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy safety review: call for evidence

I think the tricky thing with integrated lights is that there are so many different types for so many different situations. But for bikes that are only going to be used as "commuter bikes", it's a good idea. I was more concerned with schools' attitudes to cycling, driver awareness of cycli...

Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy safety review: call for evidence

I just came across a government survey regarding current policies for cycling and walking, and what could be done to make cyclists and/or pedestrians safer. The survey is open until 1 June 2018 . https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/CWIS-SAFETY/ There's full details of the survey, current policy, and the...
