Re: Bike pump

I am surprised that nobody has extolled the benefits of those gas cartridge thingies, not that I favour them!

Re: Tyre size poll

Our Thorn Tandem has 26 X 1.75 or 44 X 559

My Thorn Mercury has 34 X 622.

BTW the 622 rim comes in a narrow version for road bikes (incorrectly referred to as 700C) and still 622 mm diameter but much wider for the so called 29.5 MTB version!

Re: There could be a god after all

If I transferred by internet two grand to your bank account, and a week later you transferred two grand plus a eight quid to me, it would indeed be extortionate and clinical. This transaction looks like about 21% per annum. My credit card provider, a major bank here in Australia charges 20.4% on pu...

Re: The History and Features of the Dawes Gnat

Good to see bikes like this still in use.

Here in Oz whenever we have a heavy rubbish collection you see numerous department store kiddies bike thrown out.
Of course they have nylon bearings etc and are not really designed for ongoing maintenance.

Re: Can anyone help fix Bikehike.co.uk? Is there an alternative?

Google no longer provides a free service to mapping sites. The CrazyGuy on a bike site has decided to move away from Google maps because Google were proposing to charge him in excess of US$1,000 per month which amounts to about 25% of his annual donation income. Have a look at Ride with GPS which ha...

Re: Ortlieb bar bag mounting cable for adapter seized

AFAICR the ortlieb cable is sold as single use only so you should just cut the old cable off the bars. Bin the Ortlieb mount and get a Ortlieb compatible Rixen and Kaul Klikfix. I find it easier to use than the Ortlieb and it is fixed to the bars with four screws. There is a cable provided which the...

Re: Bottom Bracket Gears?

The Pinion has two further advantages over the Rohloff and indeed all other IGHs: first, its central position means better weight distribution than the "rear-heavy" IGH; and second, rear wheel removal is easier without having to disturb the shift cable(s). If you have the Rohloff EX box y...

Re: Copper coins

Here downunder the one- and two-cent coins were discontinued in 1991 due to the metal exceeding face value and were withdrawn from circulation. At the two major supermarkets the self checkout lines have a ratio of cash machines to card only of about 20%, i.e Aussies have enthusiastically maved towar...

Re: 5 speed block on 3 speed sturmey?

Older sturmey hubs, pre WW2 had a threaded driver before the 3 splined versions dominated. Yes, when at school in the nineteen fifties a mate found one of the threaded drivers and screwed on a very small sprocket. The best we could get with the splines was 16T. I dunno what his knees are like now! ...

Re: removing stubborn five speed (screw on )

Angle grinder?

I take it that you did use a lock nut to hold the the remover tool firmly into the freewheel before placing the flats in the bench vice and turning the wheel with hands on opposite des of the rim?
